Going on vacation
    #2164191 - 12/06/03 02:27 PM (13 years, 8 days ago)

I will be going on vacation soon and I wanna harvest a flush or two and then put my casing away. Could I just add some more overlay, spray the casing with water, and then put it away for a week and then come back and start it up again?

overlay = bad

I think what you mean is patching your casing.

BTW, you never want to directly spray casings with water.

Just cover it, place foil over it, and put it somewhere where its hotter so it doesn't get its fruiting conditions.

put the casing somewhere hotter?! Hmm, i think it's easier and safer to avoid fruiting conditions in sowhere cooler, like a fridge.

I was thinking fridge too, but was thinking the casing may fruit neverthe less b/c of the cold. People cold - shock b/c it tricks them into thinking its winter and its time for fruiting. If you place in a hotter place, 80 - 90, it will shift it back to the colonization stage again instead of fruiting.

Zwie - why do you say to never mist the casings?

I posted a thread about this recently and I've heard both sides of the argument but never heard *why* people believe one or the other.

My friend mists occasionally - seems to him that the mushrooms that grow in his yard get misted by rain and fog all the time.

By "I", I of course mean a good friend of mine who happens to live in the fine city of Amsterdam. "I" is just so less awkward.

Because if there are pins growing on the casing, you'll cause them to rot or abhort if you mist them directly. You only mist if the casing layer is VERY dry. And if you do, do it carefully, spray it a couple feet away.

So what is the bottom line? I'm in need of desperate opinions, I'm going on vacation for a month is it possible for me to leave it in the fridge after the 1st flush and bring it back out afterwards to normal operatative temps? What can I do? It took my alot of work to get this far and I dont want to just dump it. CougerF9mm@hotmail.com

I'd cover it and stick it in the fridge also, they'll be fine until you get back. And about the misting conflict, I mist my casings and everything's cool, but I try not to directly spray pins and do spray from 1-2 ft back. In my opinion its probably the amount you mist. If you mist enough to make rotten little aborts then why waste your time and just pour a glass of water on it. There's no reason for a casing to ever be Very dry anyway.
