ISO: Info regarding "patching" in relation to bulk teks
    #21641048 - 05/05/15 07:27 PM (9 years, 14 days ago)

In my never-ending quest for knowledge it has been brought to my attention via various threads I've come across that my understanding of "patching" when in the context of bulk growing is sub standard at best. In efforts to not bore the good people of the Shroomery I was hoping perhaps, I could be linked to pertinent information available on patching? I'd also be greatly appreciative if anyone felt so inclined to grace the likes of a lowly hobbyist like myself with their personal experience on the subject?

I've tried to search through several of the threads available related to this subject already but, haven't been completely satisfied with my results... Hoping for better clarification...

Thanks in advance!

why certainly good sir.  a few days after adding a casing layer, you may notice a few spots colonizing while the rest is uncolonized. you throw some casing material on these early colonized spots and it's called patching.  it's done to create a more even pinset.

Please forgive me in advance but, this casing layer that you use to patch with; is it typically the same ratio of the items used to begin with or, is it typically something to the effect of straight verm?

It's a moisture barrier. Not a substrate. A substrate is coir, manure, straw etc. Based. The casing is usually peat/verm. It's spread across the surface of the fully colonized substrate to maintain humidity at the surface of the mycelium. It's a great pinning trigger, great at holding moisture, and great for people with a drying substrate/dry climate problem.

:whathesaid:

Non nutrient layer. I usually use Peat/verm/lime/gypsum mix or sometime just coir/verm.

For example if you are using something like straw or Hpoo in your substrate you wouldnt want to case with it also. The only time its reallt appropriate to case with leftover substrate is like if your sub is C/V/G
