Moving into the woods to live in a tent for a while?
    #21640252 - 05/05/15 04:53 PM (9 years, 15 days ago)

The external stresses of the everyday world have clouded my mind and I need to escape for a while. I need to go off in the woods and just live for a while. I am strongly considering just packing my shit and my tent and walking across town to the dense woods on the east side of town. Buying a shitload of dried veggies and romen noodles and shit. maybe trip occasionally, smoke some pot, relax.

I just want to live and get my priorities straight and I feel like those would be easier to determine if I could just get away and live like that for a while. what do you all think?

My buddy did that for about month. Make sure you're near a water source and use a water filter. The Sawyer Mini is supposed to be a good one and it's pretty cheap. It's a good idea to make sure you're close enough that you can visit with people/ be visited by people. I'd go somewhere I could fish, hunt crayfish, and maybe use a .22 for small game. I'd also want to be within a 2 hour walk to a library. You're going to have a lot of downtime if you do this.

Good luck with your endeavours if this is what you choose.
I would at least do a some kind of vision fast first of all and spend some days alone with nothing but water.
Running away from society might just make it so much harder for you to integrate yourself later down the track.

So I have this killer place picked out. It's just a mile or two down the road from the library, it's like a 15 min walk through the woods from this cow pasture that we pick shrooms at, its near a little pond with this pretty muddy water, but I'm going to buy a decent walter filtration bottle and I'll just collect jugs of that water and use it to fill my bottle as needed. And I can buy like 120 servings of assorted dried veggies for like $50. It's gonna be awesome if I decide to for sure go through with this shit

Boiling with tea is good for sanitizing muddy water. You'll burn through filters really fast unless you pre filter it, and it's not worth the hassle IMO.

This is what David Koresh thought too, of course that was long before Wifi.

So I think I'm going to do a practice run and go out into the woods for a few days starting tomorrow. I'm taking an above posters advice to only take water since I'll only be out there a few days.

There aren't any 'real' forests around my town, just lots of sections of uninhabited woods that are  several acres thick. I think I'll just bring a sleeping bag, possibly a tent, and lots of water and a few books. Is there any particular area of woods I should go towards? I was thinking about just walking down the train tracks for a couple miles and then going off into the woods. Lots of black berries growing along the tracks too so if I got really hungry I could always eat black berries to my hearts content

thoughts? suggestions?

Good luck op!  I wish I could just up and take a break from society. I have too many responsibilities and too many people dependent on me being around.

Check back in and tell us how things are going

Has anyone solo camped and tripped alone before? This thread has really given me the idea! Sounds like a neat idea but at the same time it don't. Any input?

Been pondering doing this myself. Ive been reading up thru several foraging books and have been studying all the wild edibles in my area. Theres so many plants ive looked over in the past that are great wild edibles! Remember this story about this king who lost his mind and ran off into the woods and "lived with the beasts" for seven years. He came back to be an epic conqueror. Cant remember dudes name just seen it on history channel once time and thought what a great idea to get away from all the stress of modern life. Of course living primitively has its own stresses.

I know few people who live in campervans travelling around the country. Sounds interesting

I have never solo camped but I have backpacked many times.

IDK your background BUT...

Unless you have backpacked out in the middle of nowhere for 3+ days, then I wouldn't suggest trying this.

You need to at least have had some experience in understanding such extreme conditions.

I suggest that you start of slow, camp a few different weekends. Then backpack with some people miles away from any road/vehicle. Do that several times and extend your amounts of stay.

Research. Research. Research.
