I was excited by this video, and couldn't wait until my street was providing me with clean energy. Then that excitement was killed by reality: http://jalopnik.com/why-the-solar-roadway-is-a-terrible-idea-1582519375
What are your thoughts?

I saw this video awhile back, seems like a pretty cool concept, just wonder if it will ever happen.

I'd like it to happen. The LEDs would be badass, but the extra light pollution would suck.

Better than the pollution we have now though right? Fossil fuels put the atmosphere through utter fricking hell.

If you're interested in solar power, you might like this article about the new Tesla battery technology being used by SolarCity for home/utility energy storage. It has some pretty exciting implications about the future potential for solar to be economically competitive with utility power.
http://electrek.co/2015/04/22/details-on-teslas-agreement-with-solarcity-on-stationary-batteries-emerge-from-teslas-recent-sec-filings/
Quote:
Earlier today, Tesla filed their notice with the SEC for their 2015 annual shareholders meeting to be held on June 9th. In these filings, Tesla is required to review transactions with related parties. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, is Chairman and an important shareholder of SolarCity. Therefore Tesla needs to publicly acknowledge transactions between the two companies.
Tesla recently confirmed in an email to investors that their announcement on April 30th will indeed be a home battery system and an energy storage system for utilities. It has been known for a while that Tesla was testing these home battery systems through SolarCity. In the same filings last year, the company confirmed approximately $1.6 million in revenue from SolarCity during fiscal year 2013 for the sales of stationary batteries.
Today, Tesla confirmed that the revenue from SolarCity for stationary batteries went up to $2.7 million for the fiscal year 2014.
According to Rod Lache from Deutsche Bank, if SolarCity were to reach their goal of 1 million customers by 2018 and if Tesla would equip half of their customers with home battery systems, Tesla could generate $1.5 billion of revenue through 2018 from SolarCity. Tesla made $3.2 billion in revenue last year.

When I first saw that solar roadways video my first reaction was that this is a nice idea, but totally unfeasible and un-salable. This lead to a heated debate with the friend showing me the solar freaking roadways video. Unfortunately I didn't have the cognitive faculties to present a very good argument, (I was a little high:)
This thunder foot video does a far better job than I ever could at presenting the myriad of reasons why solar roadways are not a good solution for our problems.
Solar FREAKIN Roadways, are they real?
