Monotub Ratio Questions
    #21637981 - 05/05/15 02:21 AM (9 years, 15 days ago)

Currently I have 12 rye berry pint jars colonizing. 6 Rustspore and 6 Siriu. I am planning on doing 2 18 gallon monotubs which I already have built.

6 Pints of spawn per tub.

Now my question is how many lbs of substrate will I need per tub? Is it 1lb of substrate = 1 pint of spawn?

I am getting some pre-sterilized manure substrate. I am debating between getting just manure or a 50/50 mix of manure and straw. I have heard some bad things about straw and some amazing things but I have heard nothing but good things about manure in general so I can not decide.

I was thinking 5-10lbs of manure and 1lb of casing per tub. Would be nice to know how much manure exactly so I have enough.

Can you keep the extra manure until next grow?

Had a few more questions but can't think of them off the top of my head. I will post back with any more concerns.

thanks for your help in advanced. this is my first attempt at monotubs. I have gotten the pftek down pretty well and feel like I am ready to test myself at monos. Once I get monos down I will switch my entire set up to them

:peace:

Usually we compare volume not weight. I can tell you right now that 6 pints of spawn is not going to be enough.  A 1:2 ratio is probably most common which means that if you have 6 pints of spawn (3quarts) you need 12 pints sub. That is not even going to fill a 66 quart mono let alone an 18 gallon. For a tub that size to achieve a decent sub depth of 3" or more you are going to want in the ballpark of 7-10 quarts of spawn (14-20 pints) and around 12-18 quarts depending on how high you drilled your holes and the exact dimensions of the tub.

For the amount of spawn you have i would suggest a 27 quart mono and 4-6 quarts sub.

6 pints (3 quarts) is more like the amount I used for a banker's box sized minitub, which is a small footprint, tall sided 28qt tub.  For a 3.5" deep substrate mix, I used 3 quarts of colonized grains (3/4 full jars), a 200g dry weight brick of coir, one full quart of vermiculite, and 2.5 quarts of water to hydrate/pasteurize (via Damion5050 bucket tek).
