CD recommendations ( Sun Ra, Monk, Miles, or add your own)
    #2163638 - 12/06/03 08:41 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Please help a Jazz newbie out. I have a little bit of Scofield and Miles (kind of blue, bitches brew). I was hoping maybe someone around here could recommend a few albums, these guys catalogs are so freaking overwhelming I don't know where to start. Any help will be very appreciated.

If you're interested in Miles, try "The Complete Birth of the Cool", released by Capitol, or my personal faves, "Sketches of Spain" or "Miles Ahead". Not sure if it's available on CD, but Monk's "Misterioso" is my favorite Monk selection. Try also John Coletrane, such as "Giant Steps" or "A Love Supreme". Other greats, Dave Brubeck Quartet's "Time Out" (a great study in time signatures), or artists like Gerry Mulligan or Chet Baker (died in Amsterdam under strange circumstances)...hope this helps...

I love sun-ra, that stuff is pretty trippy
Hmmmm.....
Pharoah Sanders is good- dl "the creator has a masterplan"
clotrane of course- dl "impressions" its a personal favorite
Ornette Colman, he is free style and may not be everyones taste in jazz- dl the Naked Lunch soundtrack done by him
if you like the jam jazz- dl Soulive, Greyboy all-stars and I guess some MMW
Benny Gordon- Go album
Freddy Hubbard- Red Clay album
and definitely some funky jazz:
Eddie Harris- Is It In? very good shit there

Get Headhunter by Herby Hancock. It's more funkier fusion type stuff, but it's incredible.

Sketches of Spain by Miles is good too.

Got them covered! Thanks tho! I have been meaning to pick up uninvisable and I have Tonic and the Dropper both of which I love and I think I will toss in Tonic right now. I also picked up Charlie Hunters new CD yesterday, I've only listened to it once and this stuff usually takes a few times thru for my ear to catch on but I am not all that impressed with it yet, it was okay but not exactly what I am looking for.

Really, really looking for Sun Ra but I don't know where to start. I ordered Cosmic Tones For Mental Therapy off half.com for 5$ earlier today but there is so much more I don't want to risk blowing my hard earned cash. How do have those guys gotten so much accomplished?
