I'll run the yellows to 3 flushes, let you know yields when they finish.

Do you have air holes in the bags for colonization?  When I've tried to do bags this size many of them seemed to stall out before they were fully colonized.

I don't remember how to calculate BE. It's 10% of wet sub in wet mushrooms correct? If so, then I'm at 66% BE after first flush. Which The bran supplement was 10% before hydrating the pellets, 5% after.

So hopefully this next flush will put me a little closer to 100%, then I can work up supplementation to see how high I can go. The bags were small, less than 2kg each.

Bonus mushrooms from spent sub

Those oysters will be going in fried rice or pizza tonight :crazy2:

Edit: Raceme, I'm pretty sure with the larger bags you have to have the holes for that reason. I use 10", 25.4cm, tubing for my straw logs. Also, the more chopped your straw, the faster it will colonize. If you use full length or really long straw that may be causing your issues.

I've always seen BE calculated by the fresh weight of fruits over the dry weight of substrate.

Yield = wet/wet so 1kg of wet mush from 1kg wet sub =20% yield. More common in commercial grows.

B/E (generally though I have seen variations) = wet mush / dry sub so if above sub weighed 1.6kg before water was added then 1kg/1.6kg = 62 % BE

Micro perforated bags and at least 8% spawn rate. Spawn rate is critical

Man, nice job guys! those yellow oysters are doing great, and are so cool looking!

Here are a few pics of what is supposed to be a sporeless blue oyster strain, they are doing better top fruiting out of a bottle, with only straight WBS, then they r with straw spawned with WBS, these have all been done open air inside, I fucking hate how sometimes they lose the beautiful blue, the bottle did it overnight, Stamets says it's temp, but they have been held at a constant 70, so IDK

I didn't know there was a sporeless blue oyster strain floating around, neat. Try getting the temp down some if you want it blue. But they look good

My strain likes to fruit on agar in the fridge like the enoki which is a pain... I only grow them in the fall/winter and have a different strain of ostreatus that I use in the spring/summer.

Thanks Chris!

I was only told its sporeless, so I don't know for sure yet, if it is, it will def. be a keeper for sure.

BTW, yours look delicious, the only thing I hate about ones outdoors, is they get bugs and eggs in them, but oh well, more nutrition , it doesn't bother me, but it did gross me out when I first started cultivating, and was trying to use whole oysters on cardboard, and I looked one day, and there were maggots ALL over the place

Stamets and many others say that Kings are the best, but I find them rather bland, I prefer ostreatus

you need to be in the 50s or 60s if you want real blue.  the colder the better.

I'm in the UK, I buy them in by the Ton on a pallet. Despite having boat loads of fresh straw at hand they are easy to handle and store, plus the substrate density makes for efficient use of space. 1T dry pellets = 3.5T wet.

I just threw out all my fresh straw to make a King Stroph patch.

I'm in the US and I buy Streufex horse bedding pellets which are made from 100% grain straw. They can be found at a store called Southern States. I pay $8.99 per 30lb bag which makes 120 quarts of hydrated substrate. It may be an option for you, Knomadic niki, if you're in the states.

insane:

FYI -- I just got done speaking with the owner of fexstraw -- they make the Streufex horse bedding pellets.

They stopped manufacturing the product 1.5 years ago and as of today - they are out of business.

I was looking for them myself earlier in the day but found all stores has switched to selling pine shavings pellets instead.

I hope to stocked up on a couple of bags.

Last time I purchased any was this past October when I purchased nine bags from Southern States.
http://www.southernstates.com/catalog/p-5840-streufex-horse-bedding-pellets-30lb.aspx It still says there available at my local store as of 8am this morning:shrug:

Every location I checked had no inventory.

If you have a local store that still has some -- buy them up because there are no more in the future.

They were insanely expensive where I looked.  Maybe that's why they went under?
