So I've been wondering for awhile, this may be a very stupid question... If you were to fall from a high area and a couple feet before you hit the ground there's something you can get close to and kick off of, would you be able to reduce the force of falling by kicking in an opposite direction say forward? I'm not sure if that makes sense but oh well. What do you think?

My guess is no one could kick hard enough to overcome the inertia of the fall. You wouldn't be able to deflect enough energy in a different direction to really change the outcome.

I'm not sure I'm picturing the scenario as you are but the force required might be enough to break your bones. A roll might work better, I think that's what they do in parkour.

I think this questions better suited for a physicists But to answer your question you'd be exerting more force and it'd likely injure you more. Not to mention the reflexes and timing it take to complete such a feat.... My advice to you.. stay away from ledges.
Edit: as PSI mentioned a roll will transfer some of that momentum and energy into the roll instead of straight onto one part of you.

I think you mean "one for a physicist"
But no, your horizontal displacement will do nothing to your vertical displacement. You gon die.

You'd also have to have like super human speed to kick off something else. I'm assuming you're already at or close to terminal velocity. What I picture in my head of someone trying to do it is their leg just getting dragged back behind them before they can complete the kick. Kinda like what happens when you jump on a tread mill that's going way faster than you can run.

Speak for yourselfs....my leg muscles are huge bro....*flexs leg*.....Everyone knows if you fall off a building you can just jump as you hit the ground and it will reverse the fall so youll just land there standing up.

no matter what, the energy from you falling has to be displaced somewhere. in this case it would be your legs, and you would probably break them, unless you were very weak or drunk
if you werent falling far this would be different obviously.
in reality, you are better off if you fall "limp", as in being drunk.(its kind of impossible to fall limp while sobor, your reflexes prevent it too fast)
if you are drunk, or otherwise have very relaxed muscles, you can survive very long falls and car crashes.
if you are going to jump out of a car, a high window, or something like that, you are 100% better off being drunk and not resisting gravity.

OP, here is a mythbusters episode that I think is similar to what you may be thinking of. Bullet fired from gun has horizontal displacement yet dropped has no horizontal displacement, both hit the ground at the same time.

I'ts called a PLF. It can save your life.
I never served in the army, but my dad taught me the PLF.

Say you're on something falling, like maybe a rollercoaster and you were to kick off that rather than falling and kicking, because now that I think of it if you were to kick off a building your legs would probably get dragged back as previously mentioned and flip in the air. But I mean broken legs sound better than broken ribs and punctured lungs. I actually brought this up today because I was thinking of what I'd do if a rollercoaster cart derailed.

Mythbusters did that, I won't spoil the ending for you, but it's a sweet episode.
