stem butts method first try

UPDATED 22th of june P. Cubensis
-------Conclusion so far---------------
* Context: first growing attempt ever mushrooms about to be harvested from a kit straw, cardboard and containers freely available books from Stamets and others lots of ideas to confront to reality deafening overconfidence to get over obviously
* Original idea: propagate stem butts on untreated cardboard try spores on cardboard see if it works if yes try on pasteurized straw later try straw to straw transfer
* Procedure followed: hand washed with daily soap before touching cardboard and straw other than that no special care about hygiene Temp. 68°F !! Pasteurization without pre-soaking !! Not much compaction of the straw Oxygenation by opening the containers every two or three days. !! all the containers but two received by mistake water from a spray bottle previously containing essential oils !!
* Ascertainements: Nothing with spores on cardboard. Stem butts expanding on cardboard cardboard spawn expanding on pasteurized straw essential oil bottle bringing contam to a kit and chemicaly burning mycelium making it turn glassy, turning some containers stinky. Long time expanding compared to others. Mycelium having trouble getting inside the straw it seems. Mushrooms growing from that poorly colonized looking like straw.
* Personal conclusions so far: Don't spray with that bottle Make the growth more easy on cardboard but cutting stem butts in pieces and scattering cut straw real fine pre-soak with lime and bleach pack way tighter allow oxygen exchange trough cotton start BRF to get mushrooms and stem butts start grain to get spawn to do straw log from grain compare straw log from cardboard and from grain
----------------------------
2nd may
so I posted already a photo last week: this one:

I pasteurized the straw, let it cool:

inoculated (nice rhizomorphic mycelium i find):

finished the top part of the sandwich did some empty yoghourt pots, having some mycelium visible so I can control what is happening

26th may
I just come back from a 3 weeks trip in my truck, I took 2 of the 4 yougourt pots with me:
Here is the whole set-up back together

And I used this to inoculate about 2kg of straw in a bigger box:

31st may
one or two start to smell like feet :-( the others look and smell still fine..
3rd of june
cobweb mold (in fact not) and branches
5th of june
Going slow and.. unusual due to low substrate density, but no contam..

14th of june
I woke up this morning thinking: I'm gonna try to get get some myc from the straw and transfer it to agar. WHAT A SURPRISE !!! It is one of the two pots I had submerge in water last week thinking it could humidify the straw in its core better. I knew it was a dunk but I didn't think that the myc was strong enough..

17th of june

did a spore print and two petri dishes of agar clone of this one

the second one

22nd of june
it starts to be funky in there

23rd of june
last pics to conclude this experiment:

all these have their stem butts on cardboard for the next experiment!

Try putting a few stem butts Directly in the straws and skip The cardboard, or even in pasteurized sawdust bag to make (kit or sawdust spawn)

did you try?
I thought about it but I was too hungry :-) I did it to two flushes of P cubensis, I have 3 others tupperware with cardboard in case these tries are not successful (which I doubt, but let's see) Like stamets says: move it or lose it, so I have my backup
The cool stuff is that you can start growing with no sterile setup, no tools, just a thermometer, from a kit or a friend giving you a piec of cardboard

some new pics..
I was surprised that it grew quite well considering that each box was airtight and opened only 4 ou 5 times in three weeks..
Looking good though:-)
I think I'm gonna improve the set up, put all the boxes with some little holes in a bigger one with water in the bottom, for better oxygen supply and to keep the moisture..
Any good reasons to do otherwise?

hmmm... one or two start to smell like feet (but I can't see any color yet) looks like contams happen on cardboard and straw as well.. (yeah I know, go back to the basics and well known methods :-)

it is funny, there are what looks like little rocks of mycelium along the straw, it seems to be everywhere..
The first word that came to my ming was "sclerotia", but I've got no idea what it really is.

ah ok, cool
It motivates me to try again with more compact straw. I really had no concerns about cleanliness, I kept opening them to see, taking the cakes out to see, to smell, to show, handling them with bare hands..
I'm trying the same with oyster here and this time I did the presoaking before pasteurizing and I made it more tight..

that's amazing man. I told you it was contaminated in the contamination forum on your post before. It's so great to see it actually be good mycelium!

yeah no worries, I had the feeling it might not be bad that's why I was interested in why this change appeared just after I drilled the hole.
SoI managed to save this strain since I can't even get syringes for that strain ( my mail is probabely monitored now), and I hope I can refine the technique beside doing agar and all the stuff.
By the way here is the second one :-)

and thanks for your happy comment, I value it really much right now, even if I know it is not a booming cake..

Idk, 1 mushroom proves the point that it's fine. Besides all that matters in the end is getting enough for personal use . I'm so down to try things like this for shits and giggles. Except I'd probably drop agar instead of cardboard into manure jars
