On Breathing and Posture
    #2161739 - 12/05/03 03:50 PM (13 years, 8 days ago)

I would have made this two seperate threads but I think the two are linked.

I grew up with poor posture and shallow breathing. Even when I regularly played sports. I have never smoked cigarettes but I have smoked pot regularly (with intermittenet breaks up to 3 months long) for about 3 years.

I have always related my poor posture to my tall thin stature, and my shallow, chest breathing to my being slightly hunched over.

Lately with meditation and various other disciplines I have been trying to work on both of these aspects. My poster has dramatically transformed and I tend to tire my muscles now by hunching rather than keeping my back straight. However my breathing, while perhaps deeper, is still pretty limited and chest focused.

Often times when I'm trying to achieve deep trance or hypnogagic states my breathing will not be deep or slow or regular enough for me to not concentrate on it.

To counteract this malady I have been working out on a didj and focusing on stretching my lung/stomach muscles when I breath but it's slow going, like everything.

My question is has any or does anyone use regular beathing exercises and if so what are they?

I am fammiliar with "fire breathing" fast short breath cycles through the nose 2-4 per second.

The billions of kind of count breathing... 4 in, 2 hold, 4 out 2 hold. inhale for count of 8, hold for count of 4, exhale for count of 7, ect ect ect.

"Pot breathing" of tibbetan buddhists where you make your tummy pot shaped with each inhale

Chanting, aerobic exercise, diving, ect.

And do any of you have poor postures?

And if any of you have corrected a poor posture and felt a million times better afterward?

Love

i have poor posture, im starting to work on it a little. I was on mushrooms last week and i suddenly noticed how i was sitting, i instantly sat up straight without thinking about it. As though i was regaining my true posture, not one I have become attached to for comfort.

Yeah I've noticed that when I work with energy my back and neck automatically straighten out almost like I'm being polarized.

I've grown up with a really bad posture. Just now am I finally understanding exactly what I need to do to correct it, and I have slowly been making a habit of straigtening out.

So I do a lot of stretches now, pulling muscles that are rarely pulled and building up a lot of the muscles in my neck, back, and stomach... I feel a lot better now that I have made improvement, and I definitely feel really good after doing my stretches.

I haven't done breathing exercises, really, but I'm interested in hearing more.
Peace.
