Hi all =) im new to the forums as a member this is my first post yay my narwhal has been researching the cultivation methods for growing cubensis for awhile now and he is ready to start his first grow hes decided to go with a variety of cubensis that form sclerotia such as P. Azurescens (flying saucer) P. Mexicana P. Galindoi P. Tampanesis P. Cyanacens (wavy cap) < does this even make sclerotia?
His reasoning for this is the fact that forming rocks doesnt require a fruiting chamber or box for his first go around he just wants to practice getting inocculatin down so his questions are:
1. What is the variety he should pick from above is there a preffered choice or are they all the same?
2. What substrate should he use? Hes read on these forums that rye berries are the best but hes also read that brf/verm is fine for sclerotia but others say dont even go there because verm is not safe for narwhal consumtion
3. Is this a good plan? or should my narwhal start with a non sclerotia forming variety.
4. Any tips or tricks?

Keep in mind that I've only been cultivating sclerotia for about 10 months, so any of my info could be completely imagined.
The specie's that you're looking for are Galindoi, Mexicanae and Tampanenis. All 3 are Psilocybe, but none of them are cubes. Psilocybe Cubensis is a cube, that's all. As far as which is preferred, I've seen several posts that lean towards Galindoi being a more popular choice, but realistically it's all up to genetics. Just pick one that sounds interesting and try it out. Choosing between stone producers is best left to agar work where you can get a solid set of genetics too determine it's characteristics, in which case I suggest you try out all 3 and post your results!
On to substrates. I've done both grains and BRF. In my personal opinion grains win. BRF tends to produce denser, smaller stones that are easier to clean, but in the end don't get a good yield. I've also noticed more contams and drying substrates in my BRF jars. As far as grains go, I personally like rye berries, but I'm actually getting ready to switch over to WBS for cost reasons. Also, I dislike the smell of rye berries as they're soaking. Again, this comes down to preference, but I would recommend grains.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with starting your cultivation experience with societies. If you do, just be sure to read up as much as possible before you start. With fruits you'll lose a few weeks worth of work if you mess up. With stones you could lose months. Try looking up a sclerotia guide on here by Stonesun, that's where I started. That guy knows his shit!
One last tip: buy a decent toothbrush or nail brush just for cleaning your harvest. It can be a long process, especially if you're doing dozens of quart jars.
Edit: Drop the "my narwhal" bit. It doesn't actually serve any purpose and will get people irritated with you. Same goes for your gerbil, dog, lizard, roommate, SWIM and SDITTATMOWIWT (some dude I talked to at the mall once when I was twelve).

Thanks to all who posted especially you Bray you were very informative and sorry about the narwhal (basicaly a smallish whale with a unicorn horn) bit i will drop it i will drop it. I actually ended up going with P. Galindoi i read they produce larger than average stones i also ordered some Malabars and sporeworks sent me a free syringe of PF classics which im going to try to fruit invitro (which i cant seem to to find a straight-forward guide to) or perhaps fruit in a modded 2 liter or milk jug i have a couple jars of each knocked up atm assuming contams are minimal i should have enough to experiment with
