I think it's odd that people seem to be ignoring the
larger symbolism of this entire gesture.

first the fake contact with british air, then
the fake turkey.

what's next?

we find out those weren't really troops and
that wasn't really iraq?

sure, so what it's fake, BUT WHAT'S THE FUCKING
POINT OF POSING WITH A FAKE TURKEY IN THE
FIRST PLACE?

you can say we're being lied to by the media who
took the picture, but christ, the president is still
allowing himself to post for contrived photo ops and
allowing the lies surrounding them to be perpetuated.

and what of the soldier's funerals?

not one of you flag waving patriots is the slightest
bit concerned or curious as to why our president is
the first, especially in wartime, not to attend at least
ONE soldier's funeral?

sure, all these little things like outing CIA agents, blocking
investigations, stonewalling information, invading countries,
giving handouts to old business partners and outright lying
to voters, on their own all seem small issues, but when
taken in sum...this guy is a fucking SCUMBAG!!!!111

ps. economic recovery borrowed against future taxes and
present debt is no recovery at all...this is like going on a
shopping spree using your credit card...your standard of
living goes up briefly until your fiscal day of reckoning comes.

He did get behind the counter and serve turkey dinner to some troops. He did not carve up the display bird and serve it to anyone.

White House officials do not deny that they craft elaborate events to showcase Bush, but they maintain that these events are designed to accurately dramatize his policies and to convey qualities about him that are real.

There's posing for a picture, and there's creating a self-serving photo-op that possibly puts people's lives in danger. With the behaviour demonstrated by Bush so far, I know which of the two it looks like to me.

But other soldiers grew angry that their departure from the airport was delayed for an hour, while they waited for Air Force One to leave. Finding the door barred, about 50 troops got into a shouting match with the soldier blocking their exit. The streets of Baghdad were too dangerous to delay their departure any longer, they shouted.

"Do you have any idea how many IEDs are on this road?" one soldier who didn't give his name shouted, referring to improvised explosive devices or roadside bombs. "I have to get back to my base. I don't want to lose a soldier because the president wants us to sit here."

i was glad when i heard he visited baghdad.

but it kind of bugs me that he does something good for our troops and
then slips in a little photo op for himself.

its not really a big deal.. i think i just want my president to be more
selfless and modest.

shrug.

How did you get the impression that it was contrived, and not just a picture of Bush holding a holiday decoration?

Would you have felt better about it if it were one of those crappy paper turkeys.

I wonder if that was a standard military thanksgiving meal decoration, or if it was flown in especially for this one event.
