What did McKenna say about raves?
    #21610445 - 04/28/15 07:02 PM (9 years, 22 days ago)

McKenna often talked about rave and presumably EDM culture and rave music but I can't really understand what he was trying to say about it. It's kind of peculiar because I don't see how rave and electronic dance music culture relates to the shamanic or psychedelic path..

It's kind of interesting how when he talked about ecstasy. But still I wasn't aware rave culture was an important catalyst to the shamanic path McKenna advocated for. Also I heard him talk about it on a few lectures but to give you a specific one type in on YouTube "Terence McKenna MDMA interview

Yeah I know edm shows are the pinnacle of trippy psychedelic environments but i still think it the rave culture has little in common with the whole Shamanic and mushroom path McKenna advocated for.

He advocated taking them in silent darkness. He didnt think tripping at a rave was beneficial. Thats what i gathered.

He said that when a culture feels itself to be sick, it begins to produce anti-bodies, and that's what we are trying to do, is return ourselves to the last time we felt at peace with everything.

The EDM and festival/rave scene is just that, an archaic revival of the tribalistic singing/dancing/chanting/raving that we did in our ancient ritualistic behavior before we had the fall into history, he specifically performed live with The Shamen, Shpongle has included his audio work into a lot of their tracks as well.

we've always danced. in every single culture in the world, there's always been dance. so there goes that correlation with anti-bodies.

I know what OP is talking about.

What McKenna said was that at one point in his life(it was in the kind of late stage of his life, mid 40s probably) he said that he found himself at 1AM in raves yelling at the top of his lungs, usually debating someone random.

I think it was just his way of trying to fit in with the younger crowd. Probably his style of a midlife crisis :lol:

Flowing out means far-reaching;
Being far-reaching, it is said to return.

It's just a shot away..

well, he's a theorist. i'm sure he didn't come to any grand conclusions to his thesis, other than, "novelty is worn out".

Quote:

McKenna formulated a concept about the nature of time based on fractal patterns he claimed to have discovered in the I Ching, which he called novelty theory,[3][5] proposing this predicted the end of time in the year 2012.[5][6][7][8] His promotion of novelty theory and its connection to the Mayan calendar is credited as one of the factors leading to the widespread beliefs about 2012 eschatology.[9] Novelty theory is considered pseudoscience.[10][11]
