(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Hospitals around the country are seeing a severe spike in synthetic marijuana overdoses. Despite the Drug Enforcement Agency banning synthetic marijuana in 2011, people are still finding it in tobacco shops and online. The American Association of Poison Control Centers says it's received more than 1,900 calls dealing with synthetic pot since the start of the year, four times more than last year. Nearly 1,000 people in the U.S. have been hospitalized and nine people have died from overdoses. Doctors say people can have seizures, show signs of being comatose and even have a stroke. "This stuff is no joke. And we're really afraid because the use of it is increasing," said Bruce Ruck of Rutgers University. "Our warning is don't try any of this stuff, even marijuana you buy in the street. You do not know if it is laced with any of these synthetic products." Officials say hundreds of new formulas and varieties are appearing monthly. Some products have a "not for human consumption" label in order to disguise the true purpose of the substance.

Here is another story covered by the same news channel (Video) Its absolutely ridiculous.
"Synthetic marijuana kills one in Louisiana"
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - This week, one person from Louisiana died from a synthetic form of marijuana. Now, law enforcement from around the country is warning everyone to watch out.
Synthetic marijuana goes by a lot of names, like "spice," "K-2," and "fake weed." But unlike real pot, the man-made version is more potent and can be deadly.
The Drug Enforcement Administration banned synthetic marijuana in 2011, but people that has not stopped people from still finding it in places like tobacco shops and online.
There are hundreds of new formulas for synthetic marijuana coming out every month.

it amuses me that when we try to copy nature we create poison where nature made a cure.

Yeah, that's not in any way what the chemists who are developing these compounds are doing. They are creating novel agonists (unregulated) that act on biological CB receptors, not toiling trying recreate natural occurring (regulated) cannabinoids. I know that story sounds good in your hippy mind, but its just nonsense...which actually amuses me.

My mom works in a hospital on one of her patients came in on a spice overdose. Dude stopped breathing and they had to put him on a ventilator. I'd be willing to believe that there is little exaggeration on the media's part with this one, and in my opinion, it's not fit for consumption.

I think you took his use of the word "copy" literally and ran with it. First, he was speaking in general terms and he probably meant that they're intentionally making this stuff that is supposed to mimic or be at least similar to the effects of THC...which is most likely what is happening, maybe not all of these chemists but many are. Or is it just being marketed that way?
You should only be amused at your own misinterpretation and over-eagerness to put the "impractical, myth-based, tree-hugging, unscientific, misinformed, assuming" sense of "hippies" and others under your "rigorous, fact-based, unrelentingly scientific" sense.
What is even more amusing is that people still use the word hippy to try to disqualify and dismiss the points of people who are in the least bit environmentally minded or eco-friendly or a laundry list of other things that are still slightly outsider-ish in society. Hippy is just such a flexible term for those who want to quickly dismiss what's different.
Another thing, the idea of the hippy being against "the man" was not particularly about being anti-science and anti-technology. It was the lies, superficiality, and hypocrisy of the corporate world, the governments tendency to want to control and dominate everything, and war that they were against. It's so hilarious that people who aren't convinced that maybe, just maybe we are not having a positive impact on the planet or that there is even a carbon footprint...they actually think that the "hippies" want us to go back to the stone age or something. No...just no. That's how the anti-hippy mindfuck started. Let's continue with science and use better technology. Then we can even begin to reduce the impact of said footprint.
