Soaking grains
    #2160947 - 12/05/03 12:00 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

So i filled some pint jars with birdseed and water to let site for under 24 hours. Well, about 12 hours in to it, the jars are starting to smell like sour milk. Any suggestions?

That happens. You are geminating endospores and this is a good thing. Endospores have a protective shield so to speak that protects them from heat. By allowing them to soak you make them think that it is alright to grow and their defenses go down. When you PC the jars you will sterilize them by killing off evything living in that WBS.

That's the simple non technical version anyways.

That is how it should be. I recommend rinsing the grains as well to get any bacterial residue off of them.
