DIY Drying method - am i contaminating my mushies?

*not sure if right thread to post in so feel free to move it* So i live in Australia and the season has started off pretty early due to some very consistent rain and humidity! I collected some mushies and quickly realised i had no place to put them, so i made a DIY drying jar (as seen below) -

Basically, its an airtight jar with two silica gel packets at the bottom, topped by a layer of cardboard and then the mushies (psilocybe subaeruginosa)
I've had success with this method before - but using only one shroom, not sure if the dessicants will be able to handle the larger amount (especially since they were old packets)

I have heard drying in the oven at the lowest setting can get it done. I guess temps have to be higher to lose potency. Haven't tried it myself.

But thats also a pretty risky method. If it gets too hot it will ruin them

imo those will rot. Those baggies of silica gel are not enough to absorb all of the moisture.
Put'em in a warm, well ventilated place, on a rack or a piece of paper. Setting a fan directly at them will help as well.

My friend is giving me a dehyrdator this weekend hopefully for the sole purpose of mushie drying - i was just curious if this would work to be honest. If they don't rot i'll post some pics of the finished mushies.

Air dry em first, you'll have too much moisture to absorb.
I don't think the silica packs will be enough.
If you don't have a more absorbent desiccant, I'd air dry them for a day and then store them unsealed in the fridge with the silica.
The fridge will make them cracker dry.
There are many threads about heat and psilocybin/psilocin degradation, and I believe the general consensus is that the compounds are more heat resistant than previously assumed. Oxidation is more of a risk than heat from what I heard. Obviously don't "bake" your mushrooms, but low heat won't hurt.
I'd just air dry in front of a fan, though.

Air dry first then use silica to finish them off to cracker dry. Food dehydrator even better or you could use an oven on lowest setting.

for 10 bux at a craft store you can get flower drying silica which you can then dry in the oven and reuse.
you get about a 1/2 gallon for 10 bux.
i think you'd have better luck in the long run, and its a buy once and reuse situation.

also, probably putting it in the freezer whilst drying may the process.
it probably will slow it down some, but no contamns... and the freezer tends to pull moisture out of things.
add the silica and its almost a freeze dry situation.

Triple posting rxb?
Op I would at least put them on a fan for an hour or few. You can actually notice them drying pretty quickly that way If you don't have a dehydrator just use the oven. Lowest setting with or without door open doesn't matter much. Just because your oven is set at 170f doesn't mean to the mushies are the same temp.

If you leave them in that jar like that they will more than likely rot because the silica can't absorb the moisture, as stated before. It would be a shameful waste, you should air dry them first and then let the silica absorb the rest, or just dry them in the oven.

They'll rot like that. You'd need to get them mostly dried by fan before desiccating them in a chamber, and even then that desiccant is probably already spent. You can always bake the desiccant to "recharge" it.

Alright, ill see what i can do for this batch - i'll take em out and try fan dry them with a pc fan for a while (for some reason there is no actual proper fan anywhere in my house - i guess my family is too aussie to admit that we need cooling off occasionally.)
