mushrooms not developing or growing
    #21556809 - 04/16/15 07:28 PM (9 years, 1 month ago)

This is regarding pftek.  I have two batches going, one set is cakes on their third and final flush.  The flushes before were fine, but now this batch is fruiting and the mushrooms stay very small, most do not grow beyond a eighth of an inch and then turn dark brown, could this mean not enough or too much water?  I also started another batch on their first trial, it's been 11 days now and only one tiny mushroom.  Water at least morning when I get home from work and before I go to bed.  Should I water more or less?

Post a photo please. Small mushrooms, if they arent aborts can be from heavy substrate (too wet). IME it can cause the caps to open premature whem they arent much bigger than pins. Or too dry. Are thry heavy or light?

What is your FC like? If its not up to spec the substrate might be sitting in stale, saturated air... the humidity needs to fluctuate IE the FC lacks frequent air exchange

Here are some pictures, , 1st one the mushrooms, although it's hard to see the are many that have turned brown, 2nd pictures shows a mushroom with a small part of the cap blooming while the rest of the cap remains puckered.  I suspect that all this is from too much moisture, the only thing that argues against that is that underneath most of the substrate/cakes there are fairly healthy mushrooms growing and this is where most of the moisture is, as you can see in the third pic.

those do appear to be classic soaked substrate mushrooms

^ What Bod said.

IME its kinda hard to over mist, its usually fruiting chamber related. What is your fruiting chamber maybe post a pic of that too?

From what I can see in the photo it looks like a proper SGFc though

How much are you misting and fanning? After you harvest I would keep misting but back off a bit, maybe leave the lid cracked a couple hours a day.. you cpuld still pull a decent second flush

Bod what do you think he should do?

idk I've over misted cakes before. you can make them soggy if you think they need to be soaked

depends on your conditions some people may have to mist 1 time a day some may have to 5 times a day to make things right.

So is misting just based on instinct, do either of you measure the humidity in your chambers?  If so, can you describe your method?
My main concern is that I didn't kill the 5 new cakes that I've been watering for the last 2 weeks I've no pics of them for now.  So far I see one small mushroom and one tiny one, so hopefully if I hold the water back a bit I should be fine.
I've only been growing since feb., I think I overcompensated due to radiator heat, but I've been which I think sucks a lot of moisture out of the air, but that's been on less recently as the weather is warming.

the humidity doesn't matter just mist them when they dry up on the outside. if you pick them up and they're soggy don't mist for a day or two

yeah, that was totally what was going on.  As soon as reduced the water the substrates fruited.
