Different Pf methods
    #2158617 - 12/04/03 03:28 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

AFOAF was wondering if anyone has ever attempted to use something other than rice flour in the PFtek. He works at a bakery and has access to some random flours/grains. Has anyone tried wheat flour, flax, oat bran, wheat bran, 9 grain, wheat germ, corn flour? He was just wondering if any of these would work. Thanks...

A FOAF currently is doing 6 pint jrs with 1 each:

BRF/Verm/Distilled Water(DW)
Rye Flour/Verm/DW
Barley Flour/Verm/DW

BRF/Verm/DW+Karo
Rye Flour/Verm/DW+K
Barley Flour/Verm/DW+K

All jars have growth, actually pretty equal with 7 days gone by. Will post the whole rightup when completed. The idea was to test Karo-Water effectiveness not different flours, But to answer your question
YES.

Honestly BRF seems to "Coat" the verm better without clumping. Best way is to try it and see GL

Thanks fellers. I think anno's experiment is helpful for colonization but the fruiting didn't seem to fruitful or conclusive. I'll see what my foaf can figure out. Let me know what your results are too Deebo. Thnx.

Birdseed flour works equally well as BRF, also similar is corn semolina.
The substrate structure and the growth pattern is different on rye flour and on wheat flour.

Thus, I recommend BRF, birdseed flour(or millet flour) and corn semolina.
