Victorian Mushroom Season Start Dates - The Past 9 Years
    #21514086 - 04/07/15 09:06 AM (9 years, 1 month ago)

Hello fellow Shroomerino's! in frantic anticipation for this years season I have been looking back over the past "Victorian Mushroom Season" threads and have recorded the exact start dates of the last 8 years based on photo evidence. Dates are as follows:

2014 – 04.05.2014
2013 – 18.04.2013
2012 – 30.03.2012
2011 – 06.04.2011
2010 – 06.04.2010
2009 – 04.05.2009
2008 – 21.04.2008
2007 – 09.04.2007

I know that the season is based on the weather and in Melbourne you have no chance of guessing the weather any day of the week, but if you look at the dates the earliest the season has started in 8 years is 30.03.12 and the latest the season has started was 04.05.2009 & 04.05.2014. Hope you guys found this data interesting, I know I did.

thanks for posting.

but maybe post some indications of summer and autumn rsinfall and temperature trends as well, as how dry a summer is, is a good indicator of how much it will take to moisten the soil enough for populations to spring to life.  and given this point, there is a difference between natural patches and woodchipped beds.

really the best indication is the temperature drop that initiates fruiting.

Don't want to give away all the secrets to the people who aren't willing to do some research for themselves

Fucking great post mate, heading to vic next week for 8 days. Going to be looking very hard and after yesterdays rain hopefully might get a couple. Bit warm still though at night

Dude I'm not a scientist I just went through every Victorian Season post since 2007 and based on photos of confirmed subs i got these dates. I'm just referencing the archive. Any further information you require is up to you dude. I just found the pattern interesting, but I appreciate your feedback and I wish I  had more info for you but thats it. Hope you found it helpful.

Take Care & Happy Hunting

sorry mate, I didn't mean to disrespect your post. they were suggestions for what i thought you may find even more interesting.

I am a scientist, and love the sometimes hidden underlying relationships in ecological and seasonal trends, be it fungal or on a wider pattern.

Its important to be aware of how dates can be interesting, but in and of themselves they need context to give them value.  temperatures, rainfall, substrate, altitude, all contribute to what is a complex equation.  everything fluctuates within a pattern.

The problem with that is that weather data would be quite localised to the area where the shrooms were found. Whereas the season start dates above could be from anywhere in Victoria. It'd be a lot of work to track all that data down and in the end, you'd only have insight into the first find of the season, as opposed to peak of the season etc.

I've got dates on the photos of my small finds, this thread has given me the idea of going back and comparing against weather data for the closest weather station for the week preceeding my finds.

I think thats a great idea bro! If we all looked back at our pics and records of our finds, Im sure between us all we would have enough data to try and figure out a pattern or system we can use as a guide. If we all work together on this one I really think we could have something here. Anyway as always good luck & happy hunting people.

if you wanted to find a real trend to the start of the season I'd look at the relationship between the position of the mid lat Jet stream and the time of year

The quicker the jet stream retreats north for winter the quicker the colder weather should start

It's stated that the dates are started from the first photographic evidence shown on here. He didn't say that was the 100% starting date but just an observation from previous seasonal threads... If you found some and want to add to this data maybe add something useful

I wish mate! I love the ranges dude, I've always wanted to have a little homestead/micro farm up there but I cant afford it. I live, and have lived in the SE suburbs of Melbourne my whole life. That's the hunting ground I know

Does it ever really end?

Most places will be done by August. Some places will continue into September. Some places you can find dried subs really really late.

End of season is extremely variable from place to place. As is start of season for that matter.

I know what you mean mate. Life/work have kept me from getting out there most of this season but with the extreme lack of rain this year and lack of posts in the 2015 Victoria hunting season thread it dosent look like I missed much. I would say this has been the worst season I have seen in terms of weather conditions in the past 5 years Ive been hunting. About 60% of the pins that popped up at my patches this year died due to lack of rain which was very sad to see but what can you do? Just hope next season is better I guess. I'm pretty sure this season is over but im going to check my mountain patche on sunday. If there are any hanging around anywhere there will be some there if not that's the end of the season boys and girls. Good luck to you all
