ten year+ weilii hunter here... [Re: katietessruark]
    #22471138 - 11/03/15 01:36 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

This site has grown so much!! Ive been on the georgia hunting scene since the days of the Lizard hisself, and Im amazed how many people are out hunting these days!  I think thats great, and its such a beautiful and healthy hobby. Now, after reading many of the posts from newbies I decided to open up an account and help out on the boards.

Its been a great season so far, and this morning a couple new weilii and friends popped up. Hunters, dont worry, the flush should be here by the weekend after some sun sun, the temperatures are just right!

see the color of the gills, newbies....the sharpness and meatyness of the mushroom itself. these are durable guys!

a handful of dried specimen from this year

see that grass---thats vital. they love hearty grass. when theyre newborns the hoods peak just above the top of the grassline.

have your eyes peeled, these guys can camouflage, use your nose and sniff out that particular odor. A lot of hunters compare it to fresh cucumber.

and sometimes their buddies show up.

Happy Hunting everyone, end this season safely and strong!

Yes, pick the mature ones and leave the pins to continue growing. I also leave the elderly ones that are past prime.

That's exactly what I do. Although, the ones I left yesterday all aborted so now I have a handful of super meaty little dudes that look funny haha.

I haven't been able to hunt at all the last few weeks. It has been killing me but I finally went out this AM for a nice relaxing hunt with off and on light rain. No huge finds but  found several small groups over a large area. These pics are from this morning. Good luck this weekend!

Love the pictures.

By the way, why is thread thread 3 pages deep? It's been raining for a fucking week.

Haha I was wondering the same thing, but then I realized that I hadn't posted anything either. Been too busy walking I suppose? Anyway, here are some shots from the past few days:

Few small clusters of new fruits:

Another spot a few feet from the last picture:

And, as always, here's another backed up shot to show the newer guys what to look for when walking and scanning grassy areas:

This is a great time to hunt grass, go hunt! And note that these pictures were taken on grass that is not the standard thick bermuda. I wouldn't recommend spending too much time in grass like this, but it shows that they can be anywhere.

Finally got some action from this most recent rain. The real flush is about to start. I think whatever is out there are teasers for the next few days.

Enjoy.

I hope so, but with the weather getting cold again this week I'm afraid it's going to push the flush back or stop it completely, at least in my area. I have had medium flushes every few days for the past week but it took a few days for them to start after we went into the low 50s ~10 or so days ago. It's going to do that again I fear, and today is cold too. Lets hope the sun comes out for a day to help push them out before the cold rolls through again.

Tuesday/wednesday could be great though if we are fortunate. What's the coldest weather you have found large flushes in?

I did it! After 7 years of searching (only two of which were taken seriously) I found not one, but TWO different Weilii patches! It all started when I found this..

And it's little sister, under a leaf next to it...

Instead of heading home with a big grin on my face, I continued on the hunt and found this about a mile away!

I actually ended up leaving some little ones to grow up a little more. All said and done it's a little over 80 grams wet. Needless to say, it's been a good day!

Both finds were in Dekalb county in the woods. The second patch was in an area that had been disturbed probably 5 years ago or so. The trees (more like shrubs) were only about 7 feet tall at most. Pictures are worth a thousand words.. First and second spot respectively.... Happy hunting!
