Michigan certifies 32 new mushroom experts, more to take test this weekend

Michigan certifies 32 new mushroom experts, more to take test this weekend

LANSING,  MI -- Michigan has 32 new official mushroom experts following last week's first certification class and examination, with more on the way following the next two class sessions this Saturday, April 25 and next, May 2.

New mushroom expert Keith Langdon, owner of Full City Cafe in Portage, said the test was tough, even for someone like him who has been collecting mushrooms since childhood.

Langdon said he studied hard before he showed up Saturday, from materials about the 20 mushroom varieties OKed for sale in Michigan  posted on the Midwest American Mycology Information website.

Anyone who relied solely on the one-day class for expertise likely did not pass, he said.

At last Saturday's certification test, 32 participants who took the test passed, seven did not.

Langdon said the curriculum was useful and the certification very welcome. He said he has tried for years to get some sort of endorsement for his own level of expertise, and was happy that the new program is in place.

He said he will not serve or sell mushrooms until his documentation arrives from the state.

Jennifer Holton, spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, reminded people that the class is not required of people who want to forage mushrooms for their own use. Langdon said he has seen confusion about that on the Michigan Morels Facebook page he helps coordinate.

"Go out, enjoy a day in the woods find mushrooms," he encouraged.

No one needs the certification unless they plan to sell their find at restaurants, groceries or farm markets.

"The reason wild mushroom foragers are required to be certified as mushroom experts is a matter of food safety and public health," Holton said, "and required under the Michigan Food Law. There are a lot of wild mushrooms that can cause illness and even death. If you want to sell mushrooms you have harvested to the public, there must be an assurance that you are knowledgeable enough so as not to cause harm to people who buy the mushrooms from you."

Another area of confusion about the new program, Holton said: The $175 fee for this new training and certification program does not come back to the state.

"The entire registration fee goes to Midwest American Mycological Information (MAMI) to make the program self-sustaining and allow for continuation of the certification program once grant funds are exhausted," Holton said.

The program is coordinated by MAMI, the Institute for Sustainable Living, Art & Natural Design and the Michigan Farmers Market Association. A grant from MDARD's Food Safety Education Fund provided seed money for the initial year of training courses and materials. Food Safety Education Fund grant monies come from a portion of each annual food license issued to food businesses in Michigan. No tax dollars are used for this grant program.

Registration is underway for the final class session, Saturday, May 2, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Marquette Food Co-op, 502 W. Washington Street, Marquette.

Foragers must attend the class and score 80 percent or higher on the test afterwards to receive state certification as an approved mushroom identification expert, a certification that is valid for five years.
The full-day training sessions will focus on the biology and morphological characteristics used in the identification of mushrooms, and will include hands-on work with specimens, direct interaction with mycologists, and the written exam at the end of the day.

Registration has closed for this coming Saturday's session in Traverse City; registration for final session closes at midnight on the Sunday prior to the training session.
