getting immunized
    #2159858 - 12/05/03 12:46 AM (13 years, 5 days ago)

Okay Today I got some shots that were intended to immunize myself against certain pathogens since I will be working in a micro lab next semester sampling food products doing TPC and that sort of stuff. ONe of the organisms was C. botulinum. I know the organism itself isnt pathogenic its the protein it produces that is. So can anyone tell me exactly how it supposedly protects me?

Basic immunization concept:
Give immune system small, preferably non-dangerous amount of pathogen. Immune system familiarizes itself with pathogen, beats the shit out of it. Immune system puffs up with pride, and tells the story of it's conquest to all the other cells. Cells remember, gossip continues.
Toxin miraculously reappears in stronger numbers! Immune system remembers stories, taunts invader, and proceeds to kick the shit out of it again. End of story.

In truth, it does give your immune system a chance to recognize and remember toxins and also allows it a chance to produce antibodies, which are then capable of being reproduced at any time in the future in response to a similar threat. I don't have the books to run down the exact immune cells, but thats how it works.
In the case of botulism, it gives the immune system a dose, and the system then finds the source of distress and kills it...thusly, it will be prepared to do so again, at a much more rapid pace.
If you're really intrested, i can dig up my health books and find the exact pathway.
Stay Frosty.
R.C.

Yeah -- botulinum only produces a toxin (a very deadly one, at that) but antibodies can bind to toxins, too.
