Some people get confused by how and when to mist cakes. Some people may take this understanding for granted, but there are still some very smart noobs that need a little extra help. So, I thought I'd start a one stop source for all things about cake misting.
What I'd like to see is pics of cakes before and after misting at various stages of growth so others can see what you do. Sometimes words just aren't enough to explain it. Aslo try to include a little explanation.
Here is some vermiculite I put in some petri dishes just for an example. I don't grow cakes anymore and am amazed at how few pics there are of "glistening" and "no longer glistening" cakes.
Remember, everyone may do things a little different and that's great. With enough pics, a pattern should emerge for those who need this thread. Just post your stuff and try to move on without too much criticism of others. Be respectful. There's already a ton of explanations, so pics is the main point of this thread.
Dry
Damp
Glistening with moisture
Verm has it's on sparkle because of some of the smoothe surfaces of the little bits. But we mean the glistening from the water itself.
Mist cakes directly until they glisten with moisture. When it's not glistening anymore, but still appears damp, you can mist again. You can even let the verm dry a little and some people actually prefer that. Only fan right after misting, if at all, and only a couple of passes with the lid is all it takes.
If you are running out of room to store pics, I might renew my supporter account and start storing them for you for the purpose of this thread.
Should also add another part... "this is what TOO WET looks like:[PIC] "

This is an important thread...its a shame for a noob to go thru the whole process just to get it to the Fc and end up with a bunch of aborts or worse nothing but contams...I am still a little un sure myself if I am misting to much or two little.

you learn to get a feel for it. seems like you could use more FAE in there. and possibly a tad more misting. the pins are forming closer to the bottom because the micro-climate it better there. possibly because the verm likely fell off near the tops of those cake(is what it looks like) and isnt holding the moisture there as well, so the water is dripping to the bottom.
here's a tip:
next time, let the cakes sit in the verm for 30min-1hour before moving to the SGFC. then wait at least a few hours before the first mist. and when you start misting, start off really light, and build your way up, until the verm looks moist. then you can begin misting normally.
regardless, you have pins, so good job! keep it up

I have only 1 question...I bought 4 cubic feet of COURSE grade VERMICULITE. Will that be ok vs. using fine grade on my BRF cakes?

Thanks for the info.
How much would you actually have to water to become too wet?
And what about bottom watering, do any of y'all do this? https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23709670

great write-up.....thanks for the info. Here's my noob question. the SGFC requires moist (on the surface) perlite to keep the convection currents circulating. Should I be misting the surface of the perlite at the same time I mist the cakes, or does misting the cakes them self provide enough moisture on the surface of the perlite to keep the convection going. Just how moist does the Perlite need to be to keep the system working efficiently.....

I i would assume aslong as its not drying out on the surface of the perlite just mist it normal ,not unless you left the top off to dry it out alittle ,just so you have a normal convection going on and the rh isnt too low !

Any feedback would be appreciated.. I feel like this is what I want to see after misting, but as I haven't done any of this yet, I have no idea.

I agree! Wish people would share more pics here. As others have said it would be nice to see examples of cakes that have been over watered.
