Habitat: on the side of the road under bracken fern growing out of moss in southern tasmania

Gills: yellow, attached to stem, pores like a sponge.

Stem:5cm length, 1-1.3cm diameter, light brown in colour, texture is strigy?, solid stem, thick stem

Cap:6-7cm diameter, brown in colour, texture is smooth, spherical with a flat top with a little indent in centre of cap.

Spore print color:
no print

Bruising: no bruising

Other information:looks like a mushroom, slight smell of mushroom, I have been told that ALL mushrooms with gills that are spores (like a sponge) are edible is this true?
Scent of the mushroom, anything else you think is important, large close-up pictures showing stem, cap and gills.

While I am not familiar enough with boletes in your area to hazard a species guess for your specimen, I can comment on your question above.  To my knowledge, there are no known deadly boletes - but many of the red-pored / blue staining varieties are toxic and can cause indigestion, stomach pain, and diarrhea.

Your species has none of these traits, and as such should be edible.

just because its not toxic is not a reason to put it in your sandwhich.  it a) might taste foul b) texture might be awful

and the big c). do not eat raw mushrooms.

just because we assume its non-toxic doesnt mean your not going to end up with gastic problems, or have an allergic reaction.

Just wanted to ad to the above, always eat only a very small amount when you try an unfamiliar species the first time, you can work your way up from there, this should minimize any adverse reactions you might have to the species.
