Poppies and peppers help!
    #21591496 - 04/24/15 05:07 PM (9 years, 26 days ago)

So I have been growing some poppies and peppers from seed for the first time recently, everything has been going great with the poppies, but I have a question.

Is this normal?

thy have lived their whole lives inside that greenhouse, getting pretty damn hot but staying healthy.

They still look healthy minus the flower pods growing over like that. Could it be from not enough light? Or maybe over fed?

I have not fed them much at all and they still look pretty healthy so I didn't think I burned them but idk

Here are my peppers:

I am thinking either not enough light or its the soil I used  I transplanted the biggest ones and moved them all into a better spot.

Here are some about to flower morning glories from yesterday for anyone kind enough to help

cant wait to go home and look at those flowers :crazy2:

I have some spare Lemon Habanero seeds left, I think. Want a few?

On topic, the peppers look burned. Let them grow a bit and cut them with one or two nodes remaining and you'll make a lot more peppers!

[edit] It's been my experience that peppers need a LOT of root space. The size of those peppers in those containers is way too small.

Sweet, thanks for the advice. I will use the rest of the seeds I have with some better potting soil in some bigger pots.

I will have to try cloning them like that too, thanks for that advice as well, I had not even thought of that

Also, I would love some lemon Habenero, I have one or two Hab's I could trade. Maya Red and Magnum Orange I believe.

How do you think they are doing light wise? I was considering seeing how some did outside in my greenhouse, but the lows get around 45 which is still to cold.

They also are right by my door so they could have been getting a bit cold, I moved a heating mat under them partly to help.

Hi musiclover420...
About your poppies - there's nothing wrong with them at all. The buds "bow" a few days or so before opening. The night before they open, the stem will straighten (like magic, ) and at first light they burst open in all their majestic glory  Yeah, I like poppies lol haha.

They are a little cramped in that pot tho... Next time spread them out a bit, and maybe use a deeper pot. You'll get bigger pods and more per plant. But for a first go at it, you did just fine

Dang now I'm thirsty for some tea... :crazy2:

My first time I freaked out and thought they were dying too. I wanted to cry lol. Turns out it's their natural behavior. You should have your first flower any day now, Congrats!

Do NOT feed while flowering. Just let them be, and they'll do their thing, also once they flower, cut back on the water. You'll get better, fuller latex that way.

Just a tip if u dont mind, Def use a deeper pot next time, They send out a deep taproot, as deep as 2 feet or more, so a pot at least 18" tall is best. And also give them a little more space to breath. They like open airflow, even when in separate pots. Just put a little space between them is all. They look healthy, and should do well for ya
I'm not downing your grow, please don't get me wrong. Just a little constructive help after taking a good look at those pics. Again you did great on your first grow

May I ask what strain ur growing?

The peppers I've grown in doors have all grown well with a single 85w 5000k full sprectrum cfl and they have done exceptionally well. The largest harvest I got from a single plant that was pruned once gave me about 10 average sized peppers through out the winter.

Temperatures for some peppers aren't too critical. For example, bell peppers seem to thrive as cold as 50f inside of my home.
The habanero pepper plants I've grown have also done well in colder temperatures. But I had them in a window that received copious amounts of sunlight.

I've never grown poppy's before, wish I could help with that but I have no experience there!

Sweet, thanks Denman! I had read some similiar stuff in a mycotopia thread but couldn't really find much info.

I appreciate the tips too, I wish I could have transplanted some to bigger pots but I have not gotten that down yet.

Believe it or not I actually did space that pot out a bit  it was just crazy overcrowded to begin with, I weeded out the smaller in between ones but they just kept overcrowding, and at a point I didn't want to kill any more. As I get more experience over the years I am sure I will get it down.

Tips from people like you definitely help, for instance I actually just lightly watered. I have not noticed any bad signs though, and will start drying em more.

Can't wait to see their flowers! My morning glories are just starting to flower too even though they are pretty small still...

I want to get outdoor poppies down, they make such beautiful ornamental plants.

Glad you think I did good for a first timer, that pot is a mix of 3 kinds. Persian white, india blue, and afgan I believe. Then I also tried some tasmanians.

Thanks for the input Oggy, I bet it is just the root space then. Maybe too much light even, not sure how much watts they are under but probably 100-200 at least.

That's awesome you grow them inside in the winter, I am just starting some to move out for the spring/summer. I may try that too though

Well Ballsalsa, I will re pot the bigger ones with better soil and maybe lightly feed the rest, that should probably do the trick.

It's certainly nice to see green, fruiting plants in the dead of winter when theres 6+ feet of snow and temperatures below -20f before wind chill!

Damn, you must live in a pretty intense place! Definitely is crazy being able to grow your own plants in such a climate.

Nice indeed

ML420- you're welcome, anytime. Glad I can help, and post some pics when they do flower, I'm dying to see those blooms!

*DO continue to water properly before they open. Just don't overwater, which is a given for any potted plant anyway lol. Once they flower, the petals will drop Quickly, sometimes in a single day. At that point hold back watering unless absolutely necessary for them to live. Some times I will give them a nice drink in the stage your at, then that's it unless it's super dry.

Here's a few pics of one of my containers:

Bigger pots, bigger plants  There are 5 plants in this pot, and several pods were already taken, so it looks like alot of empty space up top lol. I tried to find one with the buds "bowing" but can't at the moment, sorry.

Anyway, great job, really. And i hear ya on thinning them. Dont ya just HATE having to kill a perfectly good seedling! ahhh it kills me lol. But thinning is part of the game, what can you do. As for transplanting, very hard. It really can only de done when they are babies. No more then 3 or 4 sets of true leaves, at most. I move mine as early as possible to their final location, although I mostly plant them in their permanent spot in the ground or container.

Sorry for the long post... I just love to see pics of ppl with successful grows. Feels great huh?!
I've been growing for over a ten years, but I am still FAR from an expert... However, I'm always happy to share any knowledge I can. Have a great weekend, and enjoy those beauties

I definitely will post some pics!

Sweet, I will try and keep em nice and moist before the flowers open. Then let em dry more.

Hanks for sharing those pics too, I love how poppies look! Any idea which kind those are?

Next year I will definitely try to get some in bigger deeper pots, and outdoors.

I have to force myself to thin out, it helps knowing its for the plants good.

I think I transplanted a bit early this time, I tried some a bit older that seemed to fair better.

No problem about the long post  I live seeing people excited about plants like me. Plus talking to more experienced people definitely helps. Growing does feel great, can't wait til I have been at it for 10 years!

You have a great weekend too man, and I definitely will be enjoying em :sun:

Limited to container gardening, the most important thing I learned last summer was the importance of pot size.

Those are purple Tazzies there ML. (Hope u don't mind my snipping ur name a bit lol)

It's the same strain from around 2001-02, I got the seeds by buying pods of all things. So one spring I figured instead of planting tomatoes this year, why not these? Haha and so my garden grows... Every year I saved seeds from the strongest plants and continued the gene line.

We have a very short window to grow them here, I mean literally just enuf time for them to flower and die lol. It goes from 20F degrees to 80's and 90's in the blink of an eye. So if I want that reward I've gotta work for it lol.

This year I'm experimenting with all kinds of growing conditions. Extremely loose soil vs packed, late planting and heat vs early and cool etc. my favorite question of all- should poppies have some shade during the hottest part of the day? I think so but the literature say no... Should be fun.

Alright man take care, if u have any questions fell free to post. Especially when it comes to knowing when a pod is ripe, etc... All the good stuff lol

Sweet, those look nice

None of my tasmanians made it

I was planning on doing something similiar with my seeds! Harvesting the biggest to save to re grow and such.

That is an intense season! Congrats on managing to pull that off

I love experimenting with conditions, I need to get more into it. That's awesome you have been trying that out. My poppies never acclimated to the sun so they need it

Thanks for all the friendly advice! You take care too man, and I will definitely be coming back with more questions soon

and goodluck to you too Oggy, I would love to trade seeds sometime :stoned:

So Musiclober420 - Any progress with those poppies yet? Any flowers open for ya yet? I'm quite curious to see them  and to hear how they've progressed...

I'm having some major weeding issues this year in my main grow area... It's making me crazy. Never buy cheap bagged manure... Damn cows don't digest seeds well. Grrrr.....

But a few of my "experiments" are moving along ok. This is gonna be an odd year for sure. Weather has been extremely unpredictable as well. Last week we had one day of 82 degrees already  and then it dropped into the 40s next few days, followed by a few overnight frosts. Now, today will be about 80 again. Wow this is gonna be one of those years.... I do hate that it's a one shot deal... If I lose them now that's it for a whole damn year...

I did use a whole lot of planters this year tho, and those can be easily moved and shaded, etc.  which may just save my harvest... We humans can only do so much and then were left to the mercy of Mother Nature. I would love a green house... maybe this winter?...
