Peruvian Torch inside using grow lamp?
    #2152707 - 12/02/03 06:07 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

Hi all. I searched the forums for many variations, in an attempt to see if Peruvian Torch could be grown indoors, and if it would benefit from a grow lamp, to no avail.

I saw a few posts debating the speed of growth for Pedro vs Peruvianus, but none of them gave normal time frames for the growth of Peruvianus.

So, two questions:

1) Is it possible to grow Peruvianus indoors, behind a window, at a decent speed? Would a grow lamp help matters, and if so then what wattage and timing cycles should be employed? Would it dry out the soil too fast?

2) If one were to start with a cutting of Peruvianus that is about 5 inches long by at most one inch wide (probably more like half an inch), then how long would it take to grow into a usable size (theoretically of course) using the above indoor setup?

I was shocked this evening when I saw two Peruvian Torches of that size being sold at a local headshop. Seeing Peruvianus in the flesh made me skip a heart beat. They're beautiful cacti in person!

Thanks a bunch.

It is very cold outside (and inside) where I live so I am growing two San Pedro cactuses inside in a large container with a 125W heat lamp on them. I normally leave it on for 15 hours a day because that (7am-10pm) is the most convenient for me. The only problem I have had was while painting the room they are in. The lamp was moved to close and burned a small spot on one of them. The spot turned yellow and completely shriveled up.  :frown:
I also have a 120W grow light that I am considering putting on them.
They look awesome in my bedroom too!

Does it even worth it ? It takes so much time to grow!

i have a peruvian that grows real fast and in comparison with my pedros it does shoot up really quick. but they still take along time to get anywhere worth while they both seem not to mind the fluorencent lights but theres always better ways to grow like the desert.

That's interesting poppy_smirf and pricklypedro. Do the lights make a big difference or would growing them behind a window be sufficient? Would it take more than a year or two for a cutting 5 inches tall and about 1/2 an inch wide to grow to usable size, without a lamp? What about with a lamp?

Prickly,

I'd say that indoor in the winter will be ok behind a glass if it is facing south and getting all the light of the day. with supplemental lighting.  If you want some growth you will need to supplement with either a Metal halide or Fluorescents that are in the higher kelvin range, around 6000 or so.  I would not suggest the Heat lamp, It will do but the Grow lights you got will do better.

Megaman,

A five inche cutting if properly taken care of will be ready in a few years.

As far as a year and a half indoors.  You only need to let the cactus stay under the grow lights until it warms back up.  No one can reproduce the sun in a grow light, I don't care what the add says.  Later. :stoned:

Hell yeah aint that the truth.  I have my pedro and all my cacti under a 600 watt HPS and The pedro grows well over an inch month still, I got them in the house at the end of september and threw them under like 17 hours of light a day.  They love it.  I do spend probably 60 extra dollars a month on power for it though which might not be in some of your budgets, but I love having the freedom to plant new stuff and everything all winter long and have it actually grow well.  Hope that helps a little, peace

Neon from germination to a strong seedling, then sun during summer or hps in winter. This goes on untill flowering size.

hight pressure sodium=HPS. it is a grow lamp with a lot of the red spectrum and is used to both light parking lots and in streetlights (the orange glowing ones) and primarily for the flowering cycle of indoor plants but it also works fine for vegetative growth of indoor plants.
