I have a bulk substrate 98% Colonized with cubes I want to apply a casing and only have vermiculite to do it with. can someone walk me through a clear process of whah I need to do with my verm? Here is what I think I should do...
1) Get my verm to field capacity 2) Pasteurize it in oven for an hour at 350 3) Apply it to my spawn.
A few questions... 1) can I apply my verm right away after oven or it needs to cool for a day? 2) Should I even bother with a casing layer? 3) My bulk sub is almost completely colonized on the top but my clear tub shows a lot of uncolonized areas on the sides of the sub. Does that mean I have to wait until my bulk from all sides is white with myc before going into fruitin?

Unless you're growing a PE variety or in a very dry environment, I wouldn't bother with a casing layer.

casing cubes with verm I'd just take some out of the bag, sprinkle on the sub and then mist the verm until it looks moist/darkens in color.

@spacechildo I don't need to worry about pasterizing/sterlizing the casing verm?!??! Why do people go through all the pain to do that then?
Btw do people usually pasteurizes or sterilize casings?

verm is fine to use from the bag, unless the bag has been sitting around open and gotten moisture inside and nasty stuff is growing on it.
people pasteurize casing layers. coir+verm do whatever you want!

i live with a dog, two cats, and smokers, so i would play it safe and use the oven with the verm, but thats me. my verm bags just sit open in a room, dust, hair, smoke flying around. if ur place is pretty clean, or the bag isn't opened, ur probably cool to just apply as is.
if u do choose to use oven, just wait till it cools down, u don't need to wait overnight.
i would check some pan threads and see if people used verm as casing for them with high success rate. i always used peat/verm pasteurized for pans (and cubes )

some people fruit coir subs a little bit before 100% cause its coir, but i would personally wait a bit. its not gonna wanna fruit anyway until the substrate is totally captured, so u won't be trimming any time off until fruiting
