Spongy cakes?
    #2157380 - 12/04/03 03:08 AM (20 years, 2 months ago)

This is the first time my friend ever used a PC to sterilize brf cakes...interesting thing happened that didn't happen with plain old boiling...first of all he used horticultural grade vermiculite from myco supply...pretty fine stuff...and PCed 15pst for 55 minutes. when cool, when he inoculated, the cakes were already pretty solidified, and spongy...so the needle would slide along teh glass and if pushed against the cake, took a little more pressure to break through, and it was flexible kindof like a sponge...

SO the whole point of my post...is this normal?

what was your water ratio, do they look overly wet? sometimes the fine grade can hold a lot more water and 55 min is a lot too, not neccesarily bad though. Also how much water was in the pc?

they definitely don't look overly wet....ratio was 2 parts verm 1 part brf 1 part water...the jars were still submerged in about 1 inch of water after PCing was done, it was filled to just below the edge of the lid to start...should i Have used more water in my substrate mixture?
