Do my cakes look normal??
    #21581880 - 04/22/15 08:26 PM (9 years, 28 days ago)

Alright so when I birthed these cakes and got ready to dunk and roll them I realized I didn't have the vermiculite with me... So I just dunked them for 24 hours and figured I should just watch the humidity carefully. Well the humidity in my fruiting chamber has been a steady 95-99. The temperature is kinda low fluctuating from like 62-68 but that's the best I can do right now. I've had the light on 12/12 and I try to fan them at least three times a day. And these cakes have been in the fruiting chamber for three days now.

So I guess my question is do my cakes look normal? I've seen some posts on here that say that the fuzzy white stuff is normal others say it's too humid and they need to be fanned more. I figured I'd show some pictures and get advice from the pros!

you dont have a properly built sgfc, way too few holes, and you have way too much foil,
and are those cakes made purely of grains?

u went a bit crazy on the foil, but looks fair.
Keep up with the fanning n such, u should pull
it off fine. A bit cold so it may take longer, be patient.
Do u have holes on all six sides?
Take note on what u can do to make your next
attempt better, like not forgetting the verm lol

Alright I'll trim some of the foils edges! And it does have holes on all 6 sides at about two inch intervals. The holes are like a 1/4 of an inch wide. Should I make them bigger too or just keep fanning 3 or more times a day?

I don't see any holes on the ends and only 1 row on one side. Can you post a pic of the whole tub?

The fluffy myc is either contamination or the result of of being in a high RH low FAE environment.

Did you roll your cakes in vermiculite after the 24 hour dunk?

Hopefully it isn't contamination after all of this.. I guess the holes aren't as close as I thought. lol and no I didn't roll after I dunked. I fully intended to but realized I didn't have the verm with me so I just figured I'd make sure the humidity was decent

The humidity in the tub isn't as important as the humidity at the surface of the cakes for pinning. The verm helps hold moisture at the surface and evaporates slowly to maintain humidity at the surface level. The humidity in the tub mostly just keeps the the surface from drying out as fast and provides some moisture for your fruits so they don't dry and crack.

You don't have near enough holes. They need to be every 2 inches all over the entire tub and lid. The holes around the perlite is how you maintain humidity. Without them, air can flow u through the damp perlite and to promote evaporation, which is where the vast majority of humidity comes from.

Yeah I was pretty mad that i forgot to bring the vermiculite.. If I just keep my humidity high are they still going to pin?

I'll put more holes in it tomorrow!  There are holes in the bottom too for that evaporation from the perlite but I do still need more on the sides and maybe the top. Thank you for the help!

I believe humid air is lighter, so it rises man.
I didnt realize how many issues u were having at
first lol. More practice building SGFCs indeed

Once you build a proper SGFC you'll have much better results. And is it evelvated a few inches of the surface it's sitting on? If not it needs to be. Use jars or something to lift it so the sir can flow under it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a complete fail, it's just less than optimal and you will have better results when you use tried and true methods.

I can't predict if they will pin or not. Even when everything is done right, it's hard to predict.
