Arg, Well, just how bad is Salt for mycelium?
    #2158189 - 12/04/03 03:08 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

It appears hat my casing is under attack : (

The good news is, I think its finally starting to pin

I have cut out any/all molds and slated those areas, it seems to be concentrated in the bottem right corner of my casing..

Does salt stun shroom growth? what about H2O2?

Can I mix my spray bottle, say, 100:1 with H2O2 and spray the whole casing down?

Any advice/help is greatly appreciated...

you can cut out the contamination and pour salt on the wound and nothing will ever grow there again. but the rest of it will still grow. not contamination or mycelium. this is a trick used by agricultural growers.

salt can be helpful in dispatching mold, but if you've had more than one attack on the same casing, i'd retire it.

you might do well to check the thing out from the inside anyway, top be sure there isn't a colony in the midle that you can't see from the surface. mold will take a casing like that soemtimes. start at the surface, and make it'sway inward. after you've treated the outbreak, it can continue to grow inside, to reapear at the surface, seeming to be a seperate unrelated outbreak.

Ok, I might do that, but uh, Can I spray the whole top of the casing with lysol or something, then "cut the top off" straight accross?, mycelium and all, and perhaps it will fruit from there?

Spray with 35% paracetic acid, then light it on fire.

A blow torch will scorch the surface of a casing, killing all mycelium and contaminates. Sometimes it will fruit if the now dead top is removed.

If you are even considering burning or lysoling the entire top of the casing, you need to cut your losses and toss it. Keeping it around is just asking to infest your house with contam spores that will continue to rear their ugly heads on all future projects.

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

Bleach works well to kill off contams and hardly hurts the mycellium.

that realy depends on the concentration of bleach [wich should be in aqueous solution].

In response to the original question: Pretty bad. I always try an experiment with the recipe on a few jars out of each batch I do. Once I added some bac'n bits to see how it would affect the growth. The rest of the batch did fine, but the bac'n bits jars never did ANYTHING. I always assumed it was the salt.
