Do bogus options ruin a poll?
    #2038735 - 10/24/03 12:37 AM (20 years, 3 months ago)

Alot of polls have an 'N/a' option that is commonly turned into a joke of some kind...I'm sure you've all seen polls unbalanced because of a large number of people voting the 'N/a' option because it has been spun into some kind of witty remark. So..

Does making light of the 'N/a' option ruin a poll?
Yes
No
I'm going to take it upon myself to ruin this poll

No, actually it helps the poll a great deal. If somebody gets to choose between A, B and  :nut: and decides to pick  :nut: he in that instance finds a joke more important then a straight answer, and likely has no strong opinion regarding the question raised. Since a poll is about getting results that actually -mean- something it's a good thing to add a  :nut: to weed out the non-serious.
I always include a bogus option in polls and occasionally vote for one myself.

On a true poll, anybody that doesn't "vote" has to be counted for the statistics to be valid. This is typically where the third option comes from. You cannot simply ignore data that doesn't want to behave the way you would like.
