Using 24 qt PC on weak stove or hot plate?
    #21580673 - 04/22/15 03:33 PM (9 years, 28 days ago)

I know this has been asked before, I apologize but I feel like my situation is pretty unusual. My house is old, and my gas stove doesn't have a very high flame.
The last time I PC'd, I did eventually get proper psi and everything went well except it took several hours to reach proper psi/temp.
My PC is fucking huge, a 24-quart monster.

I've been researching hot plates on here and the answers are very mixed, some of you are completely against their efficiency, while others say they work just fine.

Should I get a hot plate (I am prepared to get a good quality one if that's the case) or am I better off doing it very slowly on the gas stove?

Most hotplates aren't made to be used at high temps for hours and hours, which is what it'll take to cook grain with them. I would probably opt out of the hot plate man. I was going to buy one and use it but the con's far outweighed the pros, at least in my case.
I'm sure it'd take just as long, if not longer to PC with a hotplate as your stove anyway:shrug:

I PC on an Oster hotplate that cost 20$ at Walmart. It's 900 watts and it works better than my glass stove. It easily hits 20 psi if you don't pay attention while the glass top won't get over 15 with quarters on the weight. Has a year warranty so if it last that long it definitely pays for itself, but I've never have an issue and use it 5-7+ times a week.

Have you measured how much time does it take for a 900W electric hot plate until PC locks and then how much until it reaches 15 PSI?
