agar plates... sulfur smell??
    #21580205 - 04/22/15 12:54 PM (9 years, 28 days ago)

Hello guys! Things have been peachy but I'm feeling very insecure about my p.e. and b+ isolates on agar. Basically I took tissue samples from fruits and put them on agar. I let the cultures grow and then I isolated tissue samples from strong looking sectors onto new agar plates. Everything LOOKS great. The new plates are completely colonized with no visual signs of contamination. I have them stored in an ice chest. The issue im concerned about is the smell when i open the lid. Is it normal for agar to put off sulfur-like fumes or is this bacteria. I did all pouring and isolation inside a sanitized SAB. I used premixed MEA. Help please! This is making me uneasy about moving forward. I've researched my question but I can find no clear answers!

Shouldn't be any smell from an agar plate, except for the faintly mushroomy smell of the mycelial growth.

What type of water did you use for mixing your MEA, and how did you sterilize prior to pouring?

I used distilled water and sterilized for 45 minutes at 15 psi in pc. I need a flowhood damnit! But yea they all look perfect like this... 40 of them.
