Hello, this is my first grow and i have a few questions. for the first five days of my grow i was keeping my jars in a black small storage bin. located on the top shelf of a closet. after five days i saw no signs of growth so i did more research and found they need gas exchange. so i removed them from the closet and placed them on a ledge in my bedroom. did i make the correct decision?
it has been 12 days since my jars were inoculated and 7 since i removed the jars from the storage bin and placed them on a ledge in my bedroom, in the open. they are all showing signs of mycelium growth, which is exciting! however I'm worried because the substrate I'm using (3 parts verm 1 part brf and 1 part water) began changing a slight yellow color. this discoloration is located around the inoculation points against the glass. potentially mycelium piss, potentially contamination? i know a picture would help but i need a decent camera to even pick up the discoloration on a picture. i may just be over thinking? additionally the points where i inoculated against the glass have become small holes in the substrate, i would imagine its from the mycelium using the nutrients? I'm not entirely sure whats goin on there. could be totally normal.
additionally, one of my jars has a nice sized circle of mycelium growing but right in the center of the circle is a smaller circle of blackish/brown speckled growth around the edge of the substrate hole i mentioned earlier.

The blackish brown growth seems most likely a contam, As for the yellow, pictures(even crappy phone ones) would really help. And what do you mean small holes in the substrate? Like the top part of the cakes shrinking where the myc is growing, or it won't grow where the needle touched?
I'd say wait another or just toss the blackish brown growth jar. As for the possible yellow contams, I'd watch and wait.

Don't worry about leaving them in a closet. Gas exchange isn't a huge concern as long as you've made the proper holes in your jar lids and placed a layer of verm on top of your substrate to act as a filter for contams.
As far as your contam concerns go, a picture would be very helpful, but black/brown growth does not sound promising. If you can't provide a pic, at least keep an eye on the trouble spots for a day or so and watch for growth.
