Whole BR Jars Not Fully Colonizing
    #21578501 - 04/21/15 10:29 PM (9 years, 29 days ago)

So the above jars are a little past their due date. The uncolonized parts are clearly not going to go at this point and the colonized part is mature enough that it wants to fruit. I actually have 4 cakes from the same batch in a terrarium and one of them has like a dozen meaty looking fruits as of today, which is insane from a MS inoculation, at least in my limited experience.

In any case, are these not colonizing fully because of infection, or could it be because the rice was too sticky and compacted in those parts? They seem to have some difficulty getting all the way through using full pint jars, and I suspect/hope it's just because the rice is a little over done and/or too compressed right there.

Any suggestions from anyone with experience with this sort of thing?

I made the same mistake of grabbing tall jars when I started out, works out fine but a mild pain in the ass. This kind of variation in growth time is extremely common from MS inoculation, it's a large part of the reason people like to try and isolate using agar to get a reliable consistent performance.

Your pics don't indicate a contam to my eye, but bacteria could be a possible suspect. Mark the areas of myc growth around the jar with a sharpie and watch to see if the myc eventually overlaps these markers.

Also, any particular reason on whole BR and not BRF?

Well it just boils down to simplicity for the most part. When I first switched to this tek my reasoning was that whole rice would probably be more nutrient dense, as in BRF/PF Tek vermiculite is most of the volume, however BRF would probably have more nutrients per CC since it's powdered, and with WBR in pint jars I only fill them about 2/3 full now. It seems to me like they are heartier, meatier fruits with this tek, but obviously I'm just as prone to bias as the next person so who knows...

In any case, I just wanted to get clones as simply and easily as possible, then I'm switching to rye in quart shakers and poop.

Oh and do you think these would be good for an 12-24hr dunk if I use a sterile instrument to scrape off the uncolonized rice? I don't know if that will make them more prone to contams or not....

Interesting way of going about it, probably a better learning experience than any other. (How long has this growth taken?)

If it were me, I would wait it out a bit to be safe, myc growth can be stalled by a variety of factors, but also recovers nicely in time. I've seen slow growth jars and stalled jars from old MS take easily a month+ to fully colonize

You could risk it if you really want to, but the odds of getting to the first/second flush without contams will be reduced significantly. Without 100% growth and substrate consolidation time, you may also be making yourself wait just as long with a cake that's prematurely put into fruiting conditions.

Considering the jars look alright, and it sounds like you already have enough to make clones, why take a chance?
