water pooling at the bottom of growing bag. What to do?
    #21578984 - 04/22/15 03:26 AM (8 years, 9 months ago)

I have two plastic bags with sawdust substrate one inoculated with wine cap and the other with shitake.

Its been 1 week now and shitake mycelium is visibly growing but wine cap I can only see very little progress, in fact one small batch of mycelium growth.

The wine cap bag has a visibly small amount of water pooling at the bottom of the bag.

Can I just open the bag and pour out the excess water?

Any suggestions? Thanks

It sounds like too moist substrate.
Asking such questions without pictures is not good practice

If the sub is pasteurised try piercing the bottom of the bag and draining it. If it is sterilised then it maybe a write-off as you can't open it without contaminating it

if the block is covered/colinized, then poke a hole and tape it up quick, a bit safer way to do this is turn the back upside down with a tiny hole to drain it that way, so the hole isn't near the block, further for contams to travel

if u let it sit in the pool of water, the block will most likely fail anyway, u gotta get the water out to have any chance, or it will go soggy and rot, and even after you drain it, i would try to leave the bag turned upside down, to let even more water pool up, then pull the tape back off and drain it again
