Where can I find Cordycep Sinensis myc or spores?
    #21573713 - 04/20/15 09:48 PM (8 years, 11 months ago)

I posted this in mushroom cultivation but apparently thats "only for active mushrooms" which I think is slightly strange, but anyway:

I've looked all over...Would really love to try my hand at some cultivation. Any references, whether to members, or reasonably priced and reputable companies, would be much appreciated!

I know aloha medicinals sells them for $500, but that's a lot of money...any other sources would be hugely appreciated!

And not to get off topic, but if medicinal mushrooms are not a part of what is considered as appropriate conversation in the "mushroom cultivation" forum, then I think the title should be altered to make this more evident. Something like "Mushroom Cultivation, except non active or gourmet mushrooms"

Just a thought.

Anyway, would love some feedback here! Love this community and the incredible experience and advice that comes with it!

I have CS4 which is a non fruiting C.sinensis strain.

I see. I've heard of CS-4. From what I've read it does fruit. But if what would be the purpose of having a strain that doesn't fruit...?

The purpose is so that you can grow it commercially on a large scale in liquid then filter the mycelium out and powder that and use it as medicine.

Cordycep Sinensis  will not fruit, specially not from grains.
As I have seen around, only cultures are being sold for Cordyceps, spores are left out of the game and most of the cultures being sold are hard to verify that it is really cordyceps.

I read a study a while back where Cordyceps militaris loses vigor in only a few months and becomes progressively more difficult to fruit as time goes on. Might explain the difficulty in fruiting C.militaris that has been passed around, and why when people are successful it is with a freshly cloned culture.

I have seen no indication that CS4 will fruit though. C.sinensis can fruit, I know a guy who says either him or a friend smuggled a fruiting culture out of China but was pretty hush hush about it and was unwilling to share unless I agreed to not share the culture... I never got it.

Aloha claims that they have artificially cultivated c. sinensis. But we don't know how, nor do we have material or culture like they so its out of the option.
I have read many times that c. sinensis can't be artificially produced, specially in old documents.
Maybe you could colonize silkworms by mycelium and burry them under soil and wait. That's the only option I see for growing C. sinensis artificially. Because as I said, it won't fruit from grain. If I'm wrong, show me a picture of sinensis fruiting on grain. Militaris doesn't count. That one does.

By the way, if this about militaris losing fruiting capability is true it would be very funny to know aloha is selling a culture that doesn't fruit.

CS4 and others close to C. sinensis are cultivated in tanks in China.
What I have understood is that Aloha doesn't fruit Cordyceps spp. but
let mycelium fully grow through the medium and then extract the stuff.

C. militaris is that way good for hobbyists that strains that turn
yellow/orange in light are a bit more safe than the white ones.
After multiple cloning and people mycelium can be anything really.

On this forum there was at least two cases where wrong pathogen was grown instead of these.
The other was from a culture bank that noticed it, and other was DNA tested by Aloha.

Can you post any picture or source of sinensis growing in tanks?

What do you mean by " that strains that turn yellow/orange in light are a bit more safe than the white ones"?

It's just a tank. A picture wouldn't tell much.
It's a normal industrial process.
I have a link to a CCTV video in my link collection,
but for some reason it doesn't load at the moment.
(edit: alternative link added)
Just search "tank" at: http://speeker.freehostia.com/links

I mean that you can use it as indicator of the correct species,
even if you cannot fruit the mushroom anymore. Not that many
mycelium changes color that way. Of course one can use other
indicators too, like smell, taste and microscopy. But I would
at least fruit other species once, before relying in those.
Well, maybe microscopy could tell a pro something, but it's beyond my experience.

Militaris colors comparison. Mushroom people strain is really white (didn't fruit. ever)
compared to Roger Fudd's find. On pupae. (Both have been DNA tested.)

Roger Fudd on soybean. Tempeh type test.

For Cordyceps sinensis fruiting pics, artificial or otherwise see my blog.
Haven't included Aloha's pic because I couldn't see anything it really.
And according to them (or my memory) it was some strange crossing done by using snake venom.

A "real" C. sinensis should be really slow growing on PDA (another indicator).
Taken from a Chinese thesis. Sorry, don't know the name of it anymore.

My friend gave me a Caterpillar (with the fungal head explosion growth) he brought back from Nepal with him a few years ago, it's been sitting in storage.

Worth looking in to?

Nice blog Speeker!

But, I still don't belive I saw c. sinensis. It was likely some other specie that resembles c. sinensis - there are many different species similar to cordyceps. Or maybe the pictures are legit (those that grow from soil) but I am still sceptical.

Cordyceps sobolifera and Cordyceps pruinosa look very awesome and more rare than cardinalis and ophioglossoides. I wonder what kind of medicinals properties does Isaria Tenuipes have, there is not much info about it around.

I don't think that we can make any conclusions about some random pics.

But I don't think they are fake or wrong species. If someone knows this creature
it's those professors mentioned. There isn't anything unusual that something happens
once (accidentally or not). Only if you can repeat it (constantly), then you can call
it a breakthrough.

Feelers, no use. Buy fresh ones from Taobao. Now it's the time to get them.
They are relatively low cost when ordered straight from the local vendor. And the Chinese
buying services are cheap too. I have also bought fresh fruiting militaris from there
which is more interesting and workable solution. That is quite cheap way to get new
fruiting strains. Also from S-Korea one can order but their buyers tend to cost more.
Also some sellers/growers don't send all over Korea so it might spoil your trade.
