Personally I hate growing ksss for this very reason. Its fun if your looking to clone and produce some cool mutated genes. Just harvest when growth appears to stop I guess. They are safe to eat though so no worries.

Looking nice.
Btw, I love double end casings, it's worked well for me when I did cakes in the past.

Agreed. Keepin those cakes hydrated as they fruit.
Speck, more pics in a day or so por favor? Maybe another shot of your current set up too. I know this is like the 3rd time I've asked haha don't hate meh

I'm glad the suggestion for double end casing was given to me because it seems to be working well compared to those mutant ksss'.
I was going to post this picture earlier so might as well do it now since I have them.... these were from this morning.... wasn't sure if this was bruising or contams. It's smooth and bluish in person, nothing came off onto the qtip when I swabbed it.... the top even looks green and sorta fuzzy but in person it's all white and smooth and looks like myc to me.

Different cake:

And another:

And another:

These are from tonight:

Set up:

So this morning I took the cakes out and rehydrated the perlite.... it was bone dry and since I'm not misting the cakes now that they're fruiting I didn't want things to get too dry. Man I'm really hoping that's just bruising....

Looking good
The blueing is just from the cake evaporating & shrinking as it uses energy to now fruit. For me, they keep getting bluer with more handling/fruiting and as you near the last flush.
You can call me crazy, but I would put more holes in that box. In between the ones you have, especially in the perlite lower area. The bottom needs to breathe good too.
Did you take the cakes out and "fluff" the perlite to allow it to not be matted and whatnot? I remember doing that after watering it.
You can gently mist the top layer of the verm as you see fit, the cake will drink it.
They want air, they just want to breathe.

Hmmmmmmm. Well, I actually taped up half the holes and that's when things really started to take off..... the humidity stayed really high and I was fanning plenty and they pinned in a few days, whereas my last cakes didn't do hardly anything without the tape on the bin. It was just getting way too dry and the perlite dried out quickly.
Yes I watered the perlite very well and fluffed it up a ton making sure it was all covered with some water. My bin is again holding plenty of humidity even with all the holes exposed.... before I watered the perlite it was drying out way too fast after I took the tape off so I was misting the cakes and now I have some aborts. Oh well, lesson learned.
I'm actually going to make a new bin for my next project with only 8 holes on the front and back hooked up to an air pump. My friend who suggested the double end casing does this and has beautiful flushes so I know it works. I just want to find a method that works well for me..... I'm just not convinced that all these holes are necessary as my cakes are super dry. I should be able to dunk them and leave them until harvest time according to some folks over at mycotopia. I wonder if my location has anything to do with this..... it's been pretty dry in Wisconsin in general and we still have our furnace running.... perhaps this tek would work better in the summer and the bin with less holes would be more ideal for winter??? Who knows until you try it.
I appreciate you sticking around for the show! I'm looking forward to harvest time in a couple more days....

Can't wait to see the results. Definitely tuned into this grow.
I lived in Utah @ 7,300 ft in altitude with an arid climate of 0-15% RH at best, and I never covered holes.

RogerRabbit said: Don't cover holes. The perlite will maintain humidity for over a month without re-soaking. As you mist, you replenish the moisture anyway. The fact that the top of the perlite dries out tells you the terrarium is working as it should. RR
I also understand there are many methods that work. I just have a hard time believing the moisture is leaving your sgfc if in the right environment. The furnace could be an issue if it's near, sucking all humidity from the air. Maybe put a pot of water on or near your "furnace" if it is possible. Doesn't sound like you have a wood burning stove though. A humidifier in the room, that's what I did. Maybe you'll find a way to dial it in according to your conditions. The old boys on here that have been around a while use oil based heaters. You seem like a good head, you'll find a way.
Best of luck, I'll tune in for the flush.

Mist more and let them dry. That's my advice. Take it with a grain of salt, but I think lots of new growers experience what you are describing. It's suppose to happen, the drying out. Even when the perlite is producing 99% humidity the cakes will dry out. Like they should. Then you mist..etc.
Do what you do!

It certainly was lowered by you taping up the holes.....less airflow means less evaporation, which means less humidity, not more.

Well my bin was warm and moist every time I'd open it so I don't know, I guess I'm lying?
I misted the cakes and now I have aborts.
Like really you came here to quote me on things you don't agree with but have nothing nice to say about my first grow? I seriously don't like this site anymore.... ugh.

Thanks for the support and suggestions.... I'm paying close attention and considering everything I'm told, even when it's harsh.

Warm and moist does not equal high RH.....it eaquals warm and moist.....it was warm because heat is being trapped(no good), and moist because there is less airflow to allow for evaporation(no good either). You want a constant fluctuation in RH so there can be constant evaporation happening....this is a main pinning trigger.

Could be you misted them too hard/not gentle enough......mist with a very fine gentle mist.
