always. maybe 2-4 backup plans. but usually you end up having more spawn than you can deal with, without spending all your time spawning.
its always good when you over estimate and then run out of tubs to fruit in. id rather have too much spawn than too little.

when i tend to get buku amounts of spawn i just use extremely high spawn ratios to free up jars and tubs. it only takes 1 quart to make endless amounts of spawn.

Yeasts would be the most visable contaminants in lc due to their size and how easily they turn solutions turbid.but it depends on the medium its nutrition temp DO etc... How high it will grow up 1E8 yeast per ml ok you don't see but 5e8 its cloudy as shit. Bacteria don't always split like mad. Most won't grow to potential unless you buffer the media to the specific pH they want and supply every essential for the contaminants growth. Bacteria respond to environment with huge changes so your really at a loss unless you scope it or test it. Bacteria are suicidal too they can lower the pH to the point which they inhibit their own growth so they also fail to grow to noticeability but still retain some viability In low numbers. But hey I don't listen to RR I go out and figure out exactly why I have my opinions.

Nice post, bod.  Way to play it cool, man.  I like that.  :super:

Edit to add - I always listen to RR though.  Guy taught me damn near everything I know, and we have chewed A LOT of the same dirt.  It's a small world, I'll tell you that much right now.  :muppet:

There's always this straw man argument that people are on RRs dick but most of us have came up with more things outside of RRs paradigms than the people complaining about RR dogmatisms.

Very true lol. I could care less but I have fun posting here, about my experiences. Some people think I'm stirring the pot or something but  I've done my tests.

9.9:10 times an infected lc won't smell at all its a bad test. It would get cloudy long before it smelled. It takes a pretty high concentration of alcohol, acetic, lactic, diacetyl, etc... The common bacterial byproducts to get to taste or smell thresholds. I would use cloudyness as an indicator first besides there's not a good way to smell lc without opening it to infection. Through a filter and your already at a disadvantage in the smell dept.

Most homebrew and small craft brewery beer has infections but the product is still sellable because you won't notice and beer has more  bacterial builiding blocks than any LC recipe even before Inoculated. But if you were to pour that beer into a new beer it may go hog wild. Its the amplifications of unseen contam that eventually let's them run wild. Why a lot of small breweries fail to get big is because they never cut that problem out.

Happy to report that all 12 bags inoculated with a 1:4 rye boil water to plain water GWLC are 7 days out from inoculation recovering beautifully, no contamination.

Bags have been incubating at 68-72F.  That bag of colonized spawn on the bottom left hand corner is some fully colonized pan stip woodchip spawn that glows in the dark, and acts as a buddy & guardian over the colonizing LC bags.

Lost 3 bags to contams.

2 of these bags had wet bottoms.  All three of them were discovered to have pinhole air leaks as well.  Need to be a little more careful in the handlings of these bags once they come out of the sterilizer being that they are sterilized at 20psi for 4 hours.  The way these contaminations show up suggests that sterilizarion isn't an issue.  Also, wouldn't be so quick to call the cuture contaminated yet due to the contams only showing up in three bags that had a few problems to begin with.

The contamination pattern suggests that something got into the bag and germinated in, and along the inoculation pattern where the nutrients were the highest, and the added moisture/nutrient content of the LC would create a microclimate favoring the growth of anerobic bacteria.  The shaking of LC bags is a critical time to where if there are any contams present they will likely show themselves shortly after shake.

The other bags are colonizing right along.

Was planning on breaking up the mycelium Monday morning.

Ham, how fast can you colonize bags with your LC? I know it's not a race but can you time your bags so you know when they will be done?

fuck man. i need to buy more bags. This is so much easier for me

Many varibles come into play, such as how much substrate each bag has, how much LC is used to inoculate with, when you shake, genentics, environment, ect.

Generally, bags in this research department, using GWLC as the inoculm, are fully colonized with in 2-3 weeks.  Usually the schedule goes inoculate, then shake bags at 1 week prior to inoculation.  The bags will be fully colonized in up to between 1, and 1 & 1/2 weeks after the shake.

On this particular experiment it was chosen to let the LC do it's thing for 2 weeks before shaking was administered, because it just felt warranted to have a large amount of colonized grains before shaking on bags this large (2 gallons/8 quarts a piece).
