I've never been to jail, but I spent 11 days in the looney bin. It was terrible. I was only 17 years old, and I was terrified. The windows in our rooms were just narrow slits. The food was terrible. Medication was mandatory. I refused to take meds when I first got there, and was held down and injected with a sedative for my non-compliance. Everyone around me was either crazy, or some poor kid who'd been abandoned by his/her dysfunctional parent(s). How horrible! One kid just had cerebral palsy, but was still stuck in there. The staff abused the poor child. I saw it with my own eyes. They had to change him - catheterize him and whatnot - and they were too rough with him. He was only 10, for christ's sakes. In my personal experience, mental institutions can double as jails - especially for children. And trust me, the LAST thing on one's mind is the bed and three meals a day. What was on my mind was the crushing lack of freedom, the loneliness, and the feeling like I was completely invisible. It's like being a ghost - dead but still breathing. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

My mom was on birth control when I was conceived, but abortion wasn't considered.

I was in a holding cell once. It sucked dick, but I imagine jail to be slightly better.

Having been in both, I'd prefer the holding cell. You can just sleep until you make bail. When you're being held an extended period of time, that becomes kinda difficult. Plus if you try you run the risk of them saying it's a sign of depression and putting you on suicide watch.

You couldn't have in my holding cell. It was just four walls, an interior window, and a metal chair screwed to the middle of the floor.

Mine was just a wooden bench screwed into the wall. Was uncomfortable as shit too. If the floor wasn't so dirty I'd of probably slept on it instead. The slats were so thin and spaced far apart that it actually hurt to lay on it. There was a few of us in there. I woke up with someone sleeping at my feet. Lol was kinda awkward. Just some random person I don't even know sleeping up against me like we were old friends or something. I gave my food to the other people in there and just slept until I made bail. There's not a single other thing to do but sleep.

I wasn't even in there long enough to sleep really. Like an hour or two.
There were three holding cells there: mine, which only I was in, and two more like what you described, with like 8 people in each.

It sucks. I did 30 days. It sucks knowing the world is revolving outside of it and your stuck just sitting. I read 17 books,  got really good at cribbage, and learned how to juggle.

You're lucky then, I spent somewhere between 12 and 20 hours in there (not sure exactly). At first I couldn't even fall asleep and I felt every damn minute pass by.

i've only been in a holding cell over night, it wasn't very pleasant.

i imagine being confined in a jail for a long period of time would be much worse :/

I'd say it depends on the person and the jail/prison you are in.

If you have nothing on the outside being in jail is probably not too bad. Your accomodation, food and clothes are all sorted for you. If you are a 'normal' person with a job, girlfriend or a kid it is much harder as losing your freedom and all that goes with it is a big deal and you have no control over your life.

I did 18 months in prison in England. I deserved it so got no complaints about that but it changes your life. Being in prison is one thing but you can get used to it and try and make the best out of it but it's like you check out of normal life. i was worried all the time that my gf would leave me (she didn't and we are still together) - and I could have done nothing about it if she did.

2 big things happened when I was in prison. My gf had our first kid - I missed out at being there at the birth and you don't get another chance at that. My Dad died and I felt so bad about that that I never got to say goodbye to him and that the last thoughts he had about me was me being a 'criminal' in prison and how hurt he was by that. I got to go the funeral but handcuffed and with a guard which made me feel even worse.

At least if you are doing a bit of time you get a chance (in England anyway) to do some courses and study and I did that mainly to pass the time there and kept busy. I was lucky that when I got out my family were there, I had a place to live and I also had a gf and kid that I had to make it up too. Even when I was there I saw people getting out and then ending up coming back because they have nothing to keep them out of trouble.

You have to work much harder than anybody else if you have been in prison because not many want to give ex-criminals a chance with a job or stuff like that.

I have stayed out of trouble since then right up until Christmas when I got arrested for something very minor - basically drunk and disorderly - and am in court now for it. I was there on Friday and because of my record have to get a probation report done before I get sentenced. Anyone else would normally just get a small fine because of it but because of having a record I could end up going back inside. Hopefully that won't happen as I would lose so much but that's the way it is.

yes, the loss of your personal freedom alone without any of the other shit you hear about really is that bad. dehumanizing. just imagine being locked in a closet for 20-23 hours a day with another person mostly likely someone you don't like and wishing and wondering about what's going on outside. you have no privacy to eat shit or shower alone and you have no comforts of home. it's terribly boring and depressing and depending on your time or how much you're facing, it's incredibly stressful.

Outta 3 years, I did three weeks, 23 hours a day lockdown, one hour out in a day for "rec". A open gym with two basketballs ,and a couple hand balls, and to eat meals in chow hall. Showers 2 times a week for 5 min. And on top of it im pretty sure my celli was a fuckin SEX OFFENDER. He wouldn't tell me AT ALL what he was in for, but he HAD SOME TIME. Quick lesson learner about the joint, if your afraid to say what your there for......you gave yourself away, fuckin weirdo perv kid lover, or rapist. Thats about the only thing that people dont want people to know. Lets say after grilling him....to no avail, i told not to talk to me, and dont touch my shit or we got BIG problems. That was shitty time. That was staffing prison, maximum, was glad to get outa that damn cell. I thought alota crazy thoughts about my weirdo celli. I wanted to hurt him. Then i got staffed medium, and sent across state. I had generally "alright" cellies after that. One for murder....he was actually the best one i had. Never had problems. And he looked out for me. Im very glad im speaking of this all in past tense. Goin to the joint at 19 is scary, make you a man real fuckin quik.

Okay well let me explain something. The place i exited said Jail on the front. So keep having fun trying to tell me i wasnt in jail.

I come in here and just explain a couple shitty things i noticed while i was there. And this other dude, not who i quoted, is basically talking shit hecause apparently he spent 6yrs inside for touching some little boy.
