The Great Outdoors * 1
    #21483979 - 03/31/15 04:09 PM (9 years, 1 month ago)

So this is my first go at mycology outdoors, I wanted to post some pics and ask for some advice. I made an outside bed, per moe's outdoor tech guidelines; Only thing I did different was: 1)I did not pat down the bed during or after, 2) I used 12 jars pf spawn for a 4x4 area and 3) I covered the bed with a couple layers of plastic for insulation and protection from critters. Will these two variables affect anything? Is the extra spawn and plastic overkill? Should I press down and compact the layers? Any advice/info greatly appreciated, thanks.

It's mainly for insulation; I'm trying to keep the nighttime temps above 60. If it was warmer I think you're right, plastic might not be a good idea; in that case I'd probably just use extra straw.

I'm just curious did you pasteurize the straw? or use as is?

Soaked for 23 hrs then set wet straw in water from my hot water heater which is set at 165 for one hour, and changed water completely  half an hour through to maintain a somewhat constant temp. waited till the straw cooled down and made the bed this morning.

Oh, yea.  Like a boss.

Furthermore, I'd replace the black plastic all together with clear plastic.  Clear plastic allows for light to hit your patch benefiting over all mycelium colonization rigor.  Black plastic attracts heat and will cook the substrate up creating anaerobic environments.

Nice, thank you very much for the tips. I have a roll of clear plastic so I will replace that in the morning. It just started raining here, so I took the plastic off to give everything a good soak.

Everything else looks good.  No need to worry about packing the sub down as gravity and rain will pack the sub down gradually over time.  The extra spawn was a good plan too.  High spawn ratios ensure greater success rates of colonization of the substrate by the mushroom mycelium.  Also, subs generated with higher spawn ratios pack an extra punch come fruiting time.

Thanks again. That's what I figured about the packing and the extra spawn. I replaced the black plastic with clear, so hopefully all will be well. I'll keep this thread updated as things progress.

So it's been a couple weeks and we've had a bit of rain so I took off the plastic and couldn't help but poke around a bit. I was amazed to see mycelium just barely under the surface. I have a few questions for anyone who could help: Do I need to cover with another layer of soil? Would worm castings be better than soil? Is it alright that the mycelium is poking up above the " ground"  surface? Thanks in advance.

Very cool, man.  Got the same urges as you on the Psilo Cyan outdoor patch and couldn't help but check colonization.

Nah, no need to add any more bulk substrate.  Just let the mycelium complete it's colonization of the substrate materials already laid out before the spawn.  Once the substrate becomes fully colonized by the mycelium, the mycelium will consolidate the substrate before it fruits.

The only intervention that's required by you the cultivator left to perfom is for you to encourage the mycelium to mature in it's natural state of mushroomness.  In other words, just keep on doing what you are doing.  Keep the substrate hydrated.  If at any point in spawn run (colonization of the bulk substrate by mushroom mycelium) does the substrate begin to quickly dry out in the up and coming month(s) due to ambient temperature increases, and arid conditions, place some more grass clippings, and, or wheat straw over the patch to maintain proper substrate hydration levels in the face of temperature adversities.

One thing you could do is make a small tent with your plastic once you are ready to fruit. And judging by the timing in thread you are almost there. This can be done with small sticks or anything just to raise the plastic off the ground, creating a lil green house on the ground.

So, the weirdest thing happened to me ham loaf. After you responded about your Ps.cyan bed, I decide to throw some cyan mycelium outside myself...well, less than a week and a half later I got this. Surprised would be an understatement.I guess now I'm wondering why my cube beds still haven't fruited. Only difference between my cube beds and this one was I did the cyan bed on top of the ground, didn't dig at all and left the plastic on. Any ideas why this might be? Thanks in advance.
