Why is the world a violent place?
    #2156251 - 12/03/03 08:22 PM (13 years, 10 days ago)

That is what I want to know. I don't want to see violence ever. But it still exists. Where did this violent gene come from? Does anyone other then me think it's because we eat meat? I think that meat makes us violent. Violence drives me insane. I don't care to eat meat anymore.

it's not the meat.
the world is violent because people rationalize violence by saying that they're preventing violence. it's an old story and it only leads to more pain and suffering. it's sad to see otherwise reasonable people twisting themselves in knots to justify murder.

people who truly abhor violence would not advocate violence as a means of preventing violence.

The world is full of violence because it is full of animals. We are animals with hormones and brains driving us to eat and survive, as well as stake out territory and claim mates. In short, there is violence in the world because there must be violence. Things exist in pairs, rememeber. Peace is an impossible concept to understand without violence to contrast it with. The best thing anyone can learn to do is to appreciate the violent as much as they appreciate the peaceful. We need them both. And no, eating meat isn't what makes us violent. We're a lot more complex than that, I hope.

There is also violence because we are rational humans that have a preference that values ourselves, our families, our civilizations over those individuals that do not belong to our tribe.

I think tribalism is coming back...its soo spiritual you know? I want to start an "earth tribe", a group of people who dont feel the need to kill others to survive, people who just want to frolic in the meadow in the nude and listen to bhingi drums and smoke hashish.

My tribe will be subsequently butchered or enslaved by a more economically-minded tribe.

why is there violence??

its a human emotion. to violence is a more aggresive way of saying I'm right and you are wrong. not to say it's correct or incorrect to be violent, but sometimes it's needed. yes?

shizpow is right. We're violent because we're animals. We wouldn't be here as a species if we weren't violent. It has to be this way because it is. People who say violence shouldn't be used to overcome violence aren't thinking ahead. Of course in some idealized wonderland, everyone would just put down their guns and make peach smoothies.

hmmm I could go for one of those peace smoothies!!!!!

if we all thought the same thing regarding peace then there wouldn't be any violence, but then it wouldn't be interesting either. we'd be grey

violence happens when people cannot control what they do with their anger. Anger is not bad, violence causes harm to other people, if i want to break my own fist, or smash my wall, that should be up to me. I hurt no one else... i dont consider that violence. Telling someone to shut the fuck up and yelling at them because you dont like their ideas is gettin there . The world is violent because people dont know how to practice self control, most people dont have the care to think about what they do to other people. They think about their self benefit and dont need to think twice about what they do with their anger, some people have violent outbursts because their brain doesnt have the ability to use rationality to treat certain situations like they should. Now you will have people saying that oooo you cant have anger and still be normal... I think they confuse anger with violence, and yes... anger can lead to violence very quickly. People need to be angry, people should get upset, at least a few times in their life, in this age at least. We have not evolved to the point where we cannot ignore our emotional side of our brains. Our society is too fucked up to repress those states, i think it leads to severe psychological problems. Psychology comes in after the fact in my opinion, but should also be applied subtly before, or at least some sense of being able to "hold it together".

"violence happens when people cannot control what they do with their anger"

I disagree. Often violence is simply about economics, a country invades another for economic gain, alot of violence is initiated in the process, none of this is related to anger.

so what is the reason that people fight for that war?

Quote:

what are the people all getting violent for if they are not angry? They think its cool to fight because they are happy, and its a fun thing to do?

what causes that violence? People get angry because other people dont like their economic way, take japan for example, why did they attack pearl harbor. Obviously they were irritated. I dont know how many people kill because of irritation, that is deepseed emotional turmoil to cause that psychotic behavior. Maybe im wrong, after all im not a psychologist, so what do i know?

Zero- Japan attacked pearl harbour because the US had cut off their steel supply, which inhibited their ability to expand their empire.

that was what... what... instegated their anger... their anger is what caused them to attack. They could have solved it peacefully, but they did not. Why did they choose to kill people? That is violence... again, what would make them choose to kill people because they had their oil supply cut off, was it happiness? Was it a nice and rational bundle of choices?

I think there are a lot of different reasons that people choose violence.

Most people are violent because, under the right circumstances, violence produces results. This is the main reason that governments engage in violence.

If I'm in a position of power, often the easiest way to reinforce that power is to use violence against those who try to weaken my power. Violence is a very good deterrent. Violence is also a good way for a government to get things it wants in general, assuming they are powerful enough compared to the government who has the thing they want.

Robbers and rapists are often more into the power part of the whole thing than they are the outward gains.

Another reason is disenfranchisement. A person who has become disenfranchised feels that they have nothing to lose. They are therefore willing to take actions that would otherwise seem completely irrational. They are some of the most dangerous people out there, because, to them, the loss of their life is irrelevant. The only thing of importance, in their minds, is that their attack is successful.

This group includes people "going postal" and probably a good percentage of suicidal terrorist types.

Another group is those who are clinically insane, as their behavior, by definition, is often irrational. Those would mostly be serial killers and similar types. These people are usually psychopathic or narcissistic.

Those are the obvious reasons that come to mind after a moment's thought. I'm sure that there are others that would come up with a bit more thinking.

zero- you should read the Kamikaze's flight manual, it is completely devoid of all anger, in fact, it instructs the pilot to meditate on happiness and focus on the memories he has had of his loved ones. This is before he crashes his plane in an attempt to kill alot of people = violence.

>Why is the world a violent place?

Why=the part of the universe that knows about knowing is assessing the possibilities.
world=time/space as you know it(or at least see it).
Violence=a possible outcome
place=the space in which you question

Answer = existence is an ecology of possibilities, all of which are made of and occur in time/space. extrapolate
