Very small Koh Sumai
    #2155863 - 12/03/03 03:51 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

Everything form inoculation(brf cakes) to casing(50/50) went well. The fruiting chamber is at 74 degrees, the humidity is in the 90+ % range, air flow is good and there are no apparent contaminants.

I only half way buried the broken cakes into the casing layer. The pinset was heavy with a lot that made it to maturity. The only problem is that most of the shrooms were small. I only had three or four that made it taller than 2 inches. The rest stayed tiny but still opened.

The pics that I've seen all show bigger mushrooms.

Should I have buried the cake all the way or was it okay?

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks. This has been a step by step process but I think I'm finally getting it.

you did fine - you grew mushrooms. congratulate yourself, and resolve to grow bigger ones next time, now you know you can do it.

they were small, cos they never were allowed to grow to their genetic potential (probably. or they were from a bonsai strain). for that, they need to be from a genetically big strain, grown on thick supplemented substrates (for example with straw and poo to eat) and given the best possible growth conditions. these were broken brf cakes, half-buried in something? how deep was the substrate layer?

I don?t think the Koh sumai strain is particualrly small. It may not produce the monsters some strains do, but it can produce some decent sized fruits. Here?s a pic or two of a nice Koh Sumai Lami Beach cluster. The cluster contained 30+ shrooms. This cluster was taken off the second flush and as you can see is quite decent in size. Using the right substrate and depth will allow the fruits to reach their full genetic potential (which is no where near what these pics show BTW )  Peace

If it makes u feel better i grew some very small koh samui's also. I thought i had too deep of a casing layer on too little of substrate. Everythng until fruiting including conditions was perfect. It was even a "super strain" print from the Hawk's eye so i assume that the print was taken from a big mofo but who knows.
