I used this exact same straw and the exact same culture in some straw bottles ala muda tek style and it grew on the straw just fine. so I'm perplexed. I soaked the tub straw in dawn high power dish soap but didn't for the bottle straw. I think it's the ninja soap that caused me the problems.

I think it's because you didn't weigh the straw down

doubt it. it's literally going right over it the straw staying uncolonized the mycelium from the grains has weaved back together but you can pull pieces of uncolonized straw out.

straw tub not doing so well
It's a myth that ticks can jump. Myc can't either. Straw needs to be packed down very, very tightly.

I think he's right. Most people use bags to hold it together or something to weigh it down. To much airflow in the sub imo. The mycelium of oysters could act differently.
For cubes ime it leads to weak flushes and or contams.
That being said my first bulk ms grow was from straight straw and it led me to always use straw as an additive to the sub.

i didn't use a weight but it was packed, sure it did spring back some. but the straw colonized just fine in a jar. 90% of it was smaller than 1 inch but most of bigger pieces naturally settled on top. I've seen mycelium crawl a half inch up plastic I'm sure it's fine.

Cased grains i let flush 3 times in my greenhouse then put it outside thinking there wasn't much life left to it. Cased grains may just be where it's at.. Brought inside to harvest.

The jar most likely had minimal loss of moisture/water. Evaporation is happening to quickly with the sub, that's why you look dry at the top. Straw works fantastic with manure/verm mix. Truly can lead to some epic grows and or

I have a cake outside with trich on one half, loaded with mushrooms, and a fucking SLUG that made a burrow inside the sub. Idk why but slugs around here love that shit. At first I thought it was bacterial rot but then when I was looking at it I saw it poke it's "head" out. Pic soon to come of anyone is interested. Yes, it's still a slug motel.

Just try it again with weight this time and let us know. For tubs i like to use those plastic panels for lights for drop ceilings. Then put a cinder block on it. I really like to make mini logs though. Use the rolls of plastic for food vaccum sealers. Pack it all in there and then vaccum seal it. Give it a good day to stay compacted and then poke your holes.
And like preschooler said, oyster myc will colonize different/easier than cube myc
