To be completely honest and empty my purse out in the Pub, this is an accurate statement. "Responsible" and "respected" adults like Boy Scout leaders and a priest were both guilty of kiddy diddling on my end and led to a lot of sexual confusion. It truly is the people closest to your child that are more of a danger to them than going to play kickball on a summer evening.

DOES THIS MAKE YOU NERVOUS? PHOTOGRAPHER: SAUL LOEB/AFP/GETTY IMAGES
Quote:
Seven Reasons We Hate Free-Range Parenting 685 APR 13, 2015 1:07 PM EDT By Megan McArdle Danielle and Alexander Meitiv of Maryland want to raise their children as "free-range kids," which is to say giving them the kind of range of movement that those of us over 30 recall as a normal part of childhood. One of my cherished childhood memories is the long walks my best friend and I would take home from church through New York's Riverside Park, which Google Maps records as a distance of a mile and a half, stopping at every playground along the way. This is slightly longer than the walk home from the playground that caused Montgomery County's Child Protective Services to investigate the Meitivs last year, after someone called the police to report the alarming sight of ... children walking down the street alone. On Sunday, after another "good Samaritan" called the cops, CPS seized the children, leaving the parents frantic with worry for hours.
One could argue that this is a good lesson for the parents. One could also argue that it would be bracing to have the police periodically break into our homes to educate us about weak points in our security systems. In fact, the sort of abduction that CPS apparently wants the Meitivs to obsess over is incredibly rare and always has been.
Why has America gone lunatic on the subject of unattended children? Parents hover over their kids as if every step might be their last. If they don't hover, strangers do, calling the police to report any parent who leaves their child to run into the store for a few minutes. What's truly strange is that the parents who are doing this were themselves left to their own devices in cars, allowed to ride their bikes and walk to the store unsupervised, and otherwise given the (limited) freedom that they are now determined to deny their own kids. The police are making arrests that would have branded their own parents as criminals. To hear people my age talk about the dangers of unsupervised children, you would think that the attrition rate in our generation had been at least 30 percent.
Even people who haven't gone crazy are afraid of the Pediatric Patrol. A mom of my acquaintance whose house backs up to a school playground, with a gate that lets her children walk straight into the schoolyard, is afraid to let them go through the gate without an adult, for fear that someone would call the same nutty CPS that has taken to impounding the Meitiv children. She compromises by letting them play alone in the playground only when she is in the backyard, so that she can intervene if the police arrive.
Read the whole thing. Hysterics are ruling the world.

I grew up in a pretty gettho neighborhood which was infested with gangs and the sketchiest looking people always walking the streets During the day and night. we pretty much lived right behind a house full of gangsters, I'm pretty sure they were like the leaders of their gang n shit. ANYWay my school was right across the street and sometimes I walked to school on my own, i must have been met by stray dogs like everyday going into the school because it was always opened so anyone could go in or out. One time i got stuck on top of the monkey bars because a stray dog that seemed to be infected with rabbies, he had fome on his mouth n everything, was very very agraggressive, chased me on my way to school and started biting my legs, i had to run and climb the monkey bars which was already occupied by some other kids who also got chased. We must have been stuck up there for like half an hour until a teacher came out to the field and noticed. They chased the dog away and I remember the expression On the teachers face, it was like an angry expression, as if she was thinking "man this is fucking ridiculous this school needs to be safer..".
Anyway if ud let ur kids roam free around that area at the time, they'd get kidnapped no doubt. Bunch of creepers n shit. It was pretty bad.

Kids these days are pathetic. I saw a dad walking down the sidewalk holding onto one of the handlebars of his son's bicycle while he rode....slowly When I was that kid's age I was zipping all around the neighborhood on my bike, going off jumps and getting hurt sometimes and shit.

One time I rode my bike 1 mile to a mini shopping center and back at night unsupervised when I was like 11 or so.I watched people practice karate for a couple minutes and came back home.

When I taught my daughter to ride a bike I held the back of the seat for about five seconds to keep it vertical. Then I let go. That was all that was necessary.

There are some really fucking bad neighbourhoods out there.
I'd have to say I can't really even answer your poll, because it's false.
It depends where you are..

When I was in Elementary School I walked to school with my neighbor and we rode bikes all around, I lived in the ghetto at this time. My parents gave me some extremely loud contraption thing to bring on the walk to school and told me that if I ever was about to get kidnapped to turn it on and it'll alert the neighbors to stop me from getting kidnapped.

Kids need to be kids. When I was a kid we would roam around kidnapping the younger kids and collecting ransom from the parents. These days kids sit at home killing hookers and stealing cars.

Yeah I think times have changed. In my area now parents are required to pick their kids up from the buss stop. When i was in school you walked home from the bus stop.

Only time I do is when it's raining. Bus stop is just 2 blocks from my house, so I just let him walk home.

I think they should let kids go by themselves as long as it's not far and if they're with friends. I was gradually given more time out and what not throughout middle school and in high school allowed to stay out whenever as long as I checked up with my parents.
I remember walking home with friends during elementary school and middle school. I was fine every single time. All but once when some 20 year old (probably crackhead) stole a box of cookie dough that was from a fundraiser from me. I was maybe 12 at the time. I chased his ass to the man road and he ran across the street while cars were everywhere. I just gave up and went home. I punched the douche in the face though
