Template is less for marking, and more for fast clean efficient forstner drilling. The template lid is spaced above the fresh lid just enough to perfectly hold the forstner in place. I've tried several methods, and this has been a "game changer" for me. I'm OCD, so all my lids need to be immaculate and identical. I can bang off 18 lids in a flash, with 2 different sized holes in each.

The forstner works fine...occasionally I get a lid that is drilled a little sloppy and the hole tears open a bit but not too often. I usually end up drilling the lids on my kitchen table and hate all the fine metal dust I have to clean up. Punching the holes seems so much cleaner and efficient.

Fair enough.
Fact that I'm installing SHIPs and SFDs makes it a bit different.

I give a fuck what a Forstner bit is made for, it slices out absolutely perfect holes in both metal and PP5 lids.

For metal, I place it flat on a piece of cardboard, push it down hard, and slowly let the Forstner work its magic.

For the PP5 lid, I do the same, but use about 4-5 layers of small, circular cardboard cutouts so they fit snugly under the lid. You have to press hard and go even slower with WAY less pressure on the bit to get a proper cut and NOT crack the lid.

I also use a Forstner bit, then clean up with a deburring bit if needed.

I set my lids flat on a piece of wood so they don't bend and crease when drilling. As far as burs go they won't hurt anything. I don't mind them... the act like little teeth that hold the polyfil tighter when making grain jar lids...

Yes, save me from using a $4 bit that makes a perfect hole in whatever I need in like 7 seconds.

The metal gets bent upwards around the edges, or there's random jagged metal teeth.

Just make it so the burrs are on the inside part of the lid and you won't even know they're there.

Hell you don't even need a drill. Hammer a nail through it on a piece of wood so the lid doesn't bend and twist a file or something similar in it until the hole is the size you want.

Oh yeah and peel that crappy sealant out so the lids don't stick when you're trying to open them  Not important I suppose if you're using SHIPs

I no longer use metal lids but when I did, I just used a nail and a hammer. I would stack them 4 or 5 high and hammer the nail through that way. Now I use plastic and burn holes into them with a wood burning pen.

I just use my dremel to grind down the burrs.  Perfect holes every time.
