When I drill holes in metal lids, the holes turn out all wonky

The metal gets bent upwards around the edges, or there's random jagged metal teeth. Feel like I just ruined my lids. I doubt a self healing port will sit in there nicely.
Am I pushing too hard with the drill or something? I thought you were supposed to push on it

Don't push on it. Let the drill do the work. Honestly though, wuth metal lids i just put em on a jar and tighten the band around it. With one hand hold the screwdriver in place on the lid and with the other hand, pound down on the screwdriver handle. One good whack. If you don't whack it good enough it will bend the lid. If you're a puss, use a hammer. There will be a flap of metal on the other side. Either wiggle it off or leave it be. Won't hurt anything

Most drills have speed dial or trigger to switch from high speed-high torque, try adjusting yours. Try using a pair of needle nose pliers or similar tool to smooth out any burs and make the hole a little more even.

Forstner drill bit or plastic lids.

forstner bits are good for things that are not paper thin like lids. they're self feeding there's nothing to self feed with on a paper thin lid. use a 135º split point high speed steel drill bit for lids, and then don't drill like a dipshit
or do what azur does with a screw driver(that's what I do)

Forstner bits aren't for metal. OP, this is elementary shit. Just put a damn hole in it.

They cut perfect holes in my metal lids so they may not be made for it but still works flawlessly.

Haha yeah... we've all been using forstner bits all these years. Perfect, smooth rimmed holes. May not be "for metal" but they are hard steel. Could probably mill with one

I use forstner bits, on metal. And, with the right technique, they come out perfect. Practice on old lids. Make a template lid. Stack template on your new lid, screw the ring down firmly. Aligne the bit in the template hole. Drill with confidence. That's for my rye jars. SHIP and SFD holes...

there's no way you can mill with one. a high quality irwin one will start smoking like mad and the metal will blue on the edges if you try drilling blood wood or rock maple. if they can't handle really dense hardwood you're not milling shit.

I desperately want to do this but my injector ports need a 7/16" to 1/2" size hole to fit properly. I have searched the web far and wide for a hole punch that will punch that large. I'm convinced it doesn't exist in a hand punch. I only was able to find some bench press options.
I use forstner bits but it is a pain in the ass but at least a little better than a regular drill bit. I may switch all my lids over to heavy duty plastic ones.

just buy a cheapo spade bit and ruin it doing the few holes you need if you need them that big.

Do you make a template lid to drill through, with your forstner bits? So easy, no "skating" of the bits.
