Any of you guys into tarot cards? A lot of my friends use them a lot and have their own decks. I just got a deck from my girl friend, the standard "rider" deck. What types of readings do you guys like to do?

Yes I use the Tarot. I do readings on all sorts of things, but mostly around my spiritual path, obstacles, lessons I need to learn, choices etc. If you have a look at Aeclectic Forum they have a big index of spreads that have been shared by members.

Tarot Spreads

The cards are a fantastic tool for understanding yourself and your life path a lot better. I can honestly say I have never had bad advice from readings. Sometimes I don't immediately understand what the cards are saying, but it always turns out very accurate.

I've used various books and websites to help me to get to know the meanings of the cards, although your interpretation is the most important. I've just bought a really good book called "Path Of The Fool" by Michael Tsarion which is proving quite useful as it has a bit more scope than some others that I have used.

It really is an amazing thing, and the more I learn about it, the more I realise just how much there is to learn. All of the cards have astrological and planetary associations, correspondence to the Kabbalistic tree of life, numerology associations etc. It is a lot more than just a divination tool to learn about yourself. You can use it to learn about the very nature of existence.

"An imprisoned person," writes Eliphas Levi, "with no other book than the Tarot, if he knew how to use it, could in a few years acquire universal knowledge, and would be able to speak on all subjects with unequalled learning and inexhaustible eloquence. " Manly P Hall

There is a lot to it! But it's a good idea to start with just getting to know the symbolism of the cards by doing readings.

Have fun and enjoy

I just got my own deck, courtesy of a friend. It was suggested to me, in order to get to know the cards, that I cut one each morning and meditate on it all day. It's day 3 and has proven interesting/insightful thus far.

Back when I was a teenager I used the standard Rider-Waite tarot deck which I can recommend to anyone. Its superb for learning the Tarot.

A fancy version of it that works well for doing readings for people spooked by the supernatural is the Hanson Roberts deck. The same symbolism but so sweet and cute that few feel threatened. The ideal deck for doing a reading for angsty girlfriends and children.

Lately I'm working with the Tarot again but this time I use the African American Tarot. The AA Tarot doesnt depict symbolically what the card means unlike the former, but instead shows characters from ancient African folk legends and fables, and through the interpreting of these fables (you can find them online) you can get a better understanding of both the cards meaning in the reading, as well as of traditional African legends and lore. Theres side imagery of important people in AA black history too, but these can be ignored, its all about the traditional African legends.

Still have yet to use my cards

Unsure what is the best way to use them at this point of my life since my day to do day life is very predictable and repetitive right now

You could try asking a question of some kind? Is there something about yourself you would like to understand better? Some advice or an issue you would like help with? Is there something you would like to improve in your life?

Just because your daily activities are pretty repetitive, doesn't mean your state of mind is always the same. There could still be value in pulling a card every day and interpreting it.

Check out the link I sent above. There are tons of spreads on there for all manner of questions.

I second using aeclectic.net forums, great beginner's resource.
I think their site even has card interpretations for the standard deck too, which were quite good as I recall.

My girlfriend uses them every so often... Everytime I see her deck lying around I do a cut trying to get a certain card but never having much luck, just for shits and giggles.

The other night I drank half of a 5.5g tea of mostly caps and in my travels I saw the deck kicking around.

I cut it.

I got the card I had been trying to cut to for laughs... The Devil card.

I didn't laugh... I nearly shit in my pants.

...Gotta love coincidences :mushroom2:

Idk if it will be meaningful to anyone else. I pulled Despair (nine of swords) on the third day. The night before had had an argument with my boyfriend. It is a psychological card, indicating the anxiety and fear of the situation are internal rather than external. There are deeper meanings, but on the surface and as a quick reading, it was pretty cool. Some other instances have been drawing 8 of wands (swiftness; fire in the realm of intellect and logic) when starting a new campaign for my job and drawing the hierophant when I was considering what I really wanted from my career.

Basically, just illuminating the bigger picture of my situation at the time. I am confident that as I become more acquainted with my deck and the tarot itself, then it will reveal hidden alternatives and/or consequences to events.

I'm interested in the contemplative symbolism of the Major Arcana, especially with older decks like the Marseilles'. Divination, not so much.
