Substrate of bran and detrose, how much is left when spawn is complete?
    #21544895 - 04/14/15 01:45 AM (9 years, 1 month ago)

Help!!  I have one question; if I use bran as my substrate, how much is left when the mycelial mass is complete.

This is my technique for spawn: I mix a 1:30 parts dextrose and red bran. I crush a multi mineral and add it. I adjust pH with Calcium.  I add enough water to make it clumpy but wet then fill my jars. Sterilize then add spores. Let go for 21 days then remove the mycelial mass.  I do not go further.....I do not want to grow fruiting bodies, its too much work.  I rinse the mycelium with boiling water, then put in blendtec and make a puree. I add a few drops of curcumin to stop oxidation.  I then pour it out on cookie sheets and dry in oven.  I then grind again and fill 500 mg caps.  I think at most there is 2 to 3 percent left over bran in the powder. I am also considering mixing strains to have a more well rounded high.....

If you want to go on and grow the mushrooms, I just open the jar and place it in a water bath kept at 80 degrees in a stackable bin for 2 weeks.  I think removing the mycelial mass from the jar is not necessary and dries out the mycelium too much.  Ive seen so much overworked ideas, fanning the container, misting, etc.  If you notice when you put your mycelial mass in a growing container, the mushrooms only grow from a small part of the chunk.  Putting the jar in the container with water in the bottom allows the shrooms to grow out of the top, making harvest easier, and then you can do mycelial extraction.

Has anyone any information on the percent of substrate, in this case, bran, left in the mycelial mass?  Also, how much p. is in the mycelium vs. the fruiting bodies?    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Right now Im working on a substrate for cordyceps that can be processed in full including the mycelial mass.  H

so, ur saying u get high off of cubensis mycelium grown on red bran and dextrose, without any fruit bodies present?
or are u doing this with medicinals?

what makes u think there is only 2-3% of the substrate left after this process is complete?

It's obvious you haven't tried this. It won't work and you'll have a LOT of substrate left.

have you grown on bran? there is almost none left  2-3 percent by weight............obviously you have not. showing me pictures of oysters grown on hardwood or straw is apples to oranges.  and yes, the fruiting bodies do not have as much active ingredient as the mycelia. its ONLY job is as a reproductive body.  Mycelia is much denser and contains more per gram. I suggest you read up on commercial growing and processing of mycelia and stop being trolls.

I'm certainly no troll.  check my posts, threads, and pictures if u want.  I'm just here to learn and share brother.  i asked you two questions.  see above

in regards to actives, you are quite wrong about density of alkaloids in mycelia vs fruit bodies, especially if ur only using bran and dextrose.

in regards to medicinals, i would agree, thats how aloha makes their living.
but they need to do rigorous testing to ensure that substrate bioconversion gets to 97-98%.
additionally, its not the mycelium u are after in regard to medicinal properties necessarily, its the exudates that contain a lot of the medicinal compounds (polysaccharides, triterpines, glucans, etc).

if the substrate you are using doesn't allow for the full expression of the species ability to break down and metabolize, and in so doing, generate these compounds, the extract will not have the compounds you set out to get in the first place.

you'd get more enthusiastic responses in mush cult forum, if that's what you're looking for. you'll get more intelligent responses in advanced forum.

bran and dextrose is not an adequate substrate. you're only providing the sugars. mushrooms also need nitrogen, cellulose, etc. especially cubes, which naturally grow on poo (low in sugars, high in nitrogen). aloha uses whole, food grade grains as substrate for their products.

you think blindingleaf's 14500 posts are trolling? that is years of experience and learning, and helping others. he has helped me tremendously. have some respect.

me, i was trolling...

but seriously, your post is clearly speculation. and nobody can tell you how much bran will be left when you're done. you'll have to try it and figure it out for yourself.

"i think at most there is 2-3 percent bran" then you claim to know this in a subsequent comment? i grow cordyceps on millet and i don't know how much millet is left proportional to the grain. i don't know how you would figure that out without a lab. i suppose if you have a microscope, you could estimate...

what i want to know is: if you actually did go through this process you described...did you get high?
