those who case, do you wait for first pins before fruiting monotubs?

I've seen a lot of posts on here about people waiting for their first pins before they fruit. I was a bit confused as I was under the impression that you case when your tub reaches 100% colonization. How do you see the pins underneath a 1/2" casing? Is the waiting for pins thing only viable when you dont case?
I am doing cubes, I know you dont "need" a casing for cubes but so many teks seem to recommend doing it that its hard not to.

If you case, fruit it when around 30% of the casing has been colonized. If using coir/verm as a casing, fruit it immediately. Unless you're growing PE, casings are pretty much pointless. Unless you're in a low RH environment I wouldn't bother.

I chose to do a sub cap or top layer on my tubs rather than a casing layer and I'm liking the results. Basically you mix your spawn and sub together really well and then come back afterward and lightly crumble a 1/4 layer of substrate material over the surface.

It may take a little extra time to fully colonize if you let it. I did that on my last tub, never again.
If I were to do anything, I would case and fruit, no top layer. I believe it to be outdated info.
